Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville women's tennis team secured their second victory of the season on Sunday afternoon with a huge contribution coming from one of the team's best players.
Senior Gillian Wittig turned in a perfect weekend for the Spartans in their pursuit of their second victory of the season. Wittig went undefeated in all of her matches this weekend, claiming individual victories over Medaille and Pitt.-Bradford.
Beginning with the Mavericks on Saturday, Gillian defeated the second doubles player for Medaille 6-1, 6-2. She then paired with Lauren Karoglan in the top doubles pairing for the Spartans to earn an 8-1 victory. She helped her team earn two points in the 5-4 loss.
On Sunday against Pitt.-Bradford, Wittig was at it again earning another two points for the women. Gillian took down her opponent in the second singles matchup 6-0, 6-0 and again teamed with Karoglan in the top doubles pairing to defeat their Bradford 8-0. The two points were huge for the women as they picked up their second victory of the season with the score of 5-4.
Gillian has started off this season on a tear, going 5-1 in all singles matches and also 5-1 in each of her doubles matches. She has been entrenched at the team's number two singles player and as one half of the team's top doubles pairing.
Over her previous three seasons, Wittig has been the team's Most Valuable Player and was named D'Youville Co-Scholar Athlete of the Year in 2017-18. She has been a key piece in turning the women's tennis program and a great role model for a young team.
At Depew High School, Wittig played six years of tennis, ran four years of track and field, and played two years of basketball. She went to ECIC Sectionals from 2010-14 in tennis and 2012-15 in track and field.
At D'Youville, Gillian is an International Business major. She is the daughter of Tim and Denise Wittig.
Lauren Karoglan, Women's Tennis - Lauren had an undefeated weekend for the Spartans with wins of 7-5, 6-2 and 6-0, 6-0 in her singles matches as well as wins of 8-1, 8-0 in her doubles matches. Karoglan is the team's number one singles player and the other half of the team's top doubles pairing with Wittig. She too is 5-1 in all singles and doubles matches this season.
