D'Youville Teams Give Thanks through Food for Families in Need

Buffalo, NY - Thanksgiving brings people together not only for the food, but for appreciating what they have and giving back to those who are less fortunate.

Three D'Youville teams - softball, men's basketball, and women's basketball - all took time to purchase food for those in the community this past Thanksgiving. Between the three teams, $510 was spent on turkeys, stuffing, cranberry sauce, and other Thanksgiving related food items for those in the community.

The three teams combined to create nine complete boxes, including turkeys and enough food for several sides. There were also several canned good items purchased that went to help creating more boxes. In total, 65 boxes went to West Side Ministries, St. Peter and Paul in Hamburg Outreach Center, and 24 people in need in our college community. The additional food items that were donated filled 10 boxes that were donated to the Holy Angles food pantry.

Junior Darian Evans is a standout player for both the women's basketball and softball teams. She was one of the dozens of D'Youville student-athletes that participated in the food drive.

"Being able to provide food for those in need this holiday was truly inspiring," said Evans. "It was very heart-warming being able to make this thanksgiving special for some families and give back to the community."

Last year, the D'Youville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and the men's basketball team raised and donated $250 for the Thanksgiving food drive. This year, they more than doubled that amount was raised.
