Banquet Award Winners: Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year

Depew, NY - Wednesday, May 2 marked a day of celebration and recognition for all of D'Youville's student-athletes at the yearly Athletics Awards Banquet at Salvatore's Italian Garden.

Head coaches Earl Schunk, Stephanie Kazmierczak, and Dassy Pawlik presented the awards to the Male and Female scholar-Athletes of the Year.

For the men, junior Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) of the D'Youville men's basketball team was the recipient of his second consecutive Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award. Will achieved an outstanding 3.987 GPA as an Exercise and Sports Studies/Doctorate of Physical Therpay major. 

Not only was Will deserving of the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, but he dedicated himself to his team to earn the team's Spartan Award.

As for the women, two individuals shared the title of Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Junior women's tennis player Gillian Wittig (Depew, NY/Depew) and junior women's volleyball and women's lacrosse player Julie Fleming (Tonawanda, NY/Mt. St. Mary's Academy) were named Co-Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year as both dedicated themselves on the court, but in the classroom as well.

Wittig attained a 3.932 GPA in the International Business program and as also named the team's Most Valuable Player this year for the third consecutive season. Fleming maintained a 3.866 GPA in the Dietetics program whilst being a two-sport athlete. 

Both have maintained their character and demeanor in the classroom and on the court as they were named to the AMCC Fall Sportsmanship Team.
