D'Youville Athletics Week in Review: 1/12/19 - 1/19/19

Buffalo, NY - The first week of the 2019 spring semester is in the books at D'Youville with the D'Youville men's volleyball team beginning their season and both men and women's basketball teams in the heart of their conference schedules. Each basketball team picked up crucial conference wins as they currently sit inside the playoff picture with a handful of games to go. 

 

Women's Basketball

  • Record during the week - 1-2 AMCC
    • Overall record 7-9, 4-5 - fifth in the AMCC
  • Danielle Hore Named AMCC Player of the Week and D'Youville Athlete of the Week
    • Scored 24 points - a then career high - in the team's 80-65 win over Penn State-Behrend on 1/9 with eight steals, seven boards, and five assists. Danielle then scored a new career high of 26 points and tied a career high with 17 rebounds after playing all 45 minutes in the 70-66 overtime win at Mount Aloysius. Through 13 games (up until Monday's game against Medaille) Hore ranked first in the AMCC in steals (3.1 SPG), second in rebounding (12.0 RPG), third in assists (5.7 APG), and fourth in scoring (16.5 PPG).
  • Monday, January 14 - Medaille - 61, D'Youville 58
    • A tough loss for the Spartans on the road. D'Youville took a one-point lead with under a minute to go in the game, but the Mavericks pulled out the late win.
    • Danielle Hore (13 points, 7 rebounds, 6 assists), Darian Evans (10 points, 11 rebounds), and Monica June (10points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds) led the way for the women.

  • Wednesday, January 16 - Pitt.-Bradford - 76, D'Youville - 66
    • Another close game for D'Youville as they trailed by four with under four minutes to go in the game. Bradford held on to defeat the Spartans.
    • Danielle Hore (16 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds), Monica June (16 points, 4 rebounds), and Jordan Smith (16 points, 7 rebounds) were the leading scorers for the Spartans.

  • Saturday, January 19 - D'Youville - 91, Pitt.-Greensburg - 87 - Overtime
    • The women battled for 45 minutes and overcame a nine-point deficit at halftime to come back and force overtime. D'Youville got out to a six-point lead in overtime and shut down Greensburg to go on for the win.
    • Danielle Hore (18 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists), Monica June (17 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists), Darian Evans (16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), Jordan Smith (15 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists), and Sydney Alton (11 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists) - the starting five - all scored in double figures and played at least 30 minutes each.

Men's Basketball

  • Record during the week - 2-0 AMCC
    •  Overall record 7-8, 5-4 - fifth in the AMCC
  • Wednesday, January 16 - D'Youville - 81, Pitt.-Bradford - 59
    • The Spartans dominated their first game of the week on both ends of the court. The men won the shooting (50%-39.7%), rebounding (46-33), assist (21-17), and points off turnover (26-17) battle. D'Youville got out to a huge 25-5 lead, never looking back as they led at 56-30 at one point on their way to their 22-point victory.
    • Grant Beyer (24 points), Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (21 points, 11 rebounds), Brian Nwaekeke (8 points, 5 assists), and Simeon Heard (8 points) were the top performers for the Spartans.

  • Saturday, January 19 - D'Youville - 105, Pitt.-Greensburg - 72
    • The biggest win for the Spartans this season, D'Youville played a tightly contested game with the Bobcats early in the first half. However the men took off with just under 10 to play in the first half, going on a 21-4 run to lead at half 49-32. It was more of the same in the second half as D'Youville continued to pour it on as the team shot an incredible 59.7% from the field in the victory. 
    • Brian Nwaekeke (23 points, 5 rebounds), Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (19 points, 9 rebounds), Grant Beyer (16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals), Brian Sharp (14 points, 3 steals), and Simeon Heard (13 points, 6 assists) all were efficient on the offensive end.
