AMCC Announces Preseason Polls for Men and Women's Basketball

Buffalo, NY - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) released the preseason polls on Tuesday afternoon with the men and women's basketball programs expected to compete for playoff positions.

Men's Basketball

The D'Youville men's basketball team is coming off a playoff season where the team finished fifth in the conference and made an appearance in the 2018-19 AMCC Playoffs. This coming season, the Spartans are pegged to finish ninth in the conference this season by opposing coaches.

Sophomore guard Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) and junior forward Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) were selected as players to watch this season for the Spartans. Darrell was one of the top point guards in the conference last season and had an impressive freshman season with the men, starting all 23 games in which he played while finishing the season fourth in scoring (8.7 PPG) on the team while first in assists (3.5 APG) anf first in steals (1.3 SPG). As for Beyer, he is the team's leading returning scorer as he scored double-figures 15 times and was the sixth best scoring in the conference (14.7 PPG). His impact outside of the arc was one of the best in the AMCC as he finished ninth in three-point percentage in the conference (41.1%).

La Roche - the 2018-19 regular season champions - are expected to finish first yet again in 2019-20 and have the AMCC Preseason Player of the Year. Mount Aloysius was voted on to finish second in the AMCC while the reigning tournament champions, Penn State-Behrend, come in third in the coaches poll.

Women's Basketball

The D'Youville women's basketball team is expected to improve upon their 2019-20 season and compete for a spot in the AMCC Playoffs. D'Youville was voted on to finish seventh in the conference this coming season after finishing tied for eighth last season.

Sophomore guard and reigning AMCC Newcomer of the Year Danielle Hore (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) and sophomore guard/forward Riley Riedel (Marilla, NY/Iroquois) were highlighted as players to watch for the Spartans this coming season as two of the more young and dynamic players in the AMCC. Hore was the do-it-all player for the women last year, earning AMCC Second Team All-Conference honors. She finished second in the AMCC in assists (5.7 APG), third in steals (2.6 SPG) and rebounds (9.7 RPG), fourth in minutes (36.7 MPG), and sixth in scoring (14.7 PPG) while leading the team in all those categories. Riedel saw most of her freshman season go down due to injury, but the 6-foot-2 guard/forward combo is a mismatch for any opponent.

After dominating the conference for years, La Roche is expected to return to the top of the conference with a two-year drought of titles and finish first in the AMCC. The Redhawks have the reigning AMCC Player of the Year, who is expected to repeat as well. Hilbert, the two-time defending conference champions, are selected to finish first and Penn State-Behrend is picked to finish third after tying for fifth last season.
