The D'Youville College baseball team played just seven games in the 2019-20 season before the remainder of the schedule was cancelled amid the COVID-19 outbreak. The team was fortunately able to complete its spring trip and return home safely from Florida before being informed of the news.
Ultimately, the NCAA granted a blanket waiver for all student-athletes this spring which allowed the five Seniors on the D'Youville team to decide whether they would return for another season.
These five players have all made the call to return to the Spartans next season and gave us some insight into their respective decisions:
3B/RHP - Brendan Burke
1B/LHP – Nick Jank
2B – Matt Guenther
LHP – Adam Lampman
RHP – Bryce Little
"My decision to return for another year of baseball was an easy one. It's awesome getting to play the sport I love with some of my best friends and I'm thankful to have one more year of that. Can't wait to see what's next!" -Brendan Burke
"I decided to return to play ball next year because I still have a lot to prove to myself. I'd like to be able to compete at a high level for as long as I can. My college career started with an injury which kept me out an entire year. I also am cutting my college baseball career even shorter due to graduate school. I can't wait for the one last opportunity to show what I can do while playing the game I really love." -Nick Jank
"My decision to return playing another year of baseball at D'Youville was truthfully not hard at all. When thinking back about all the good times I've had, I just couldn't see myself ending it the way it did. Obviously I want to think about my future beyond the diamond, but for tight now giving myself one more year to play the game I love as well as making countless more memories will be something I can cherish forever. I definitely don't want to think about the possibility of regret. 'It ain't over 'til it's over.' – Yogi Berra." –Matt Guenther
"I decided to return following the shortened season because baseball has been my passion for almost all of my life. It would've been difficult to pass up the opportunity to play another season. I was excited about the team we had this year and I feel we have some unfinished business. I'm looking forward to taking the mound once again next year, and I'm thankful for the chance to continue playing with this team." -Adam Lampman
"For me, my decision to return was a no brainer. The season ending after only a week of play left a bitter taste in my mouth and I didn't think I'd have the opportunity to gain my eligibility back. I'll be attending DYC next year for my second year of Physical Therapy school, so deciding to return was an easy choice for me. Very excited for the future of this program and to make more memories with some of my best friends." -Bryce Little
As a department, we are grateful for their collaborative dedication to D'Youville Baseball and excited to have these student athletes returning to compete and continue to lead our program in the 2020-2021 year.
