It is with deep regret that we share D’Youville will suspend the 2020 fall athletic season due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This decision accompanies a similar announcement made by the East Coast Conference on July 17, 2020 to suspend fall play. While this is a very disappointing outcome of our restart plan, the health and safety of our student-athletes is our top priority and is the primary driver for this decision. Athletics is a central part of the D’Youville experience for many of our students and for the University more generally. We remain fully committed to providing meaningful seasons of competition for all impacted fall and winter sport student-athletes during the spring semester. We intend to begin safe competition after January 1, 2021.
There will be significant opportunities this fall for coaches to work with those student-athletes who are both on and off campus, providing a meaningful athletic experience for our student-athletes. We are planning to execute a fall student-athlete engagement experience that will involve safe opportunities for team and individual growth through practice, strength and condition, professional development, leadership training, and more. All activity will be monitored by our athletic medical staff and will adhere to all federal, state and local health guidance as well as institutional policies. We are committed to our student-athletes safety and it will remain at the forefront of all that we do. We expect to have more details in the weeks ahead and will share information as it becomes available.
