Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville baseball returned to Buffalo following their Spring Training stint in Florida and got their first win of the season, splitting their first conference doubleheader against the Medaille Mavericks winning the game one 4-1 and losing game two 4-0.
Medaille started off the scoring in the top of the first inning, taking a 1-0 lead over the Spartans. In the bottom of the inning, D'Youville would respond and take the lead. Leadoff hitter Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) started off the offense with a single to left. Haak then stole second, followed by a walk to Thomas Brummer (Amherst, NY/St. Joe's).
Next up, Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) nearly missed a home run, belting the ball of the bottom of the fence for a double, moving Brummer to third and driving in Haak to tie the game at 1-1. Following Simoncelli's RBI, Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) came to bat and hit a sac-fly to right field, bringing in Brummer and giving D'Youville a 2-1 lead after the first inning.
After surrendering a hit and a run in the first inning, pitcher Dan Fox (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) allowed one hit in the next six innings. His offense added some insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) reached first on an error for the first baserunner of the inning for the Spartans. Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) then moved Stimpfel over to second with a single, and Stimpfel was then pinch ran for by Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga).
The bases were loaded after Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) walked, bringing Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) to the plate. LiPani then worked a walk out of the Medaille pitcher, driving in Numan-Ali from third. In the next at-bat, Haak hit a sac-fly to right, driving in Reynolds and extending the lead to 4-1. D'Youville would go on to defeat Medaille by that score, winning their first game of the season.
Fox was outstanding once again, pitching his third complete game of the season. The ace right-hander allowed only two hits over seven innings, allowing one earned run and struck out eight. Four different Spartans recorded an RBI and a run in the game, with Haak and Simoncelli leading the team in hits with two each.
Game two saw the D'Youville bats struggle as they failed to get a run across the plate through nine innings. Medaille took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third and added three more runs in the top of the fifth. The Mavericks would win the game by the final score of 4-0.
Tyler Goodridge (Lockport, NY/Lockport) pitched well in the second game of the day. After a tough fifth inning, Goodridge settled back down allowing five hits in the final four innings. He pitched his first complete game of the season, allowing four runs in nine innings and struck out two. Haak led the team with two hits and Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) had three walks.
D'Youville will travel to Penn State-Altoona on Saturday, April 2nd for their next game as they take on the Lions in an AMCC doubleheader beginning at 1pm.
