Alfred, NY – The D'Youville baseball team was unsuccessful in their efforts to even up this weekend's home-and-home with Alfred State, losing game one 13-7 and game two 6-4 to the Pioneers on Sunday.
Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) was the first Spartan on base in the top of the first with a double to left field. Next up, Eric Simoncelli (Hamburg, NY/Hamburg) drove in Macrides for the first run of the game with a single, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
Alfred State would answer back with two runs in the bottom of the first to take a 2-1 lead. D'Youville would then retake the lead in the next inning with a strong offensive output.
Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) led off the inning with a walk followed by a Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) single. Both runners would advance a base with a throwing error by the Alfred State with Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) coming to bat. Hammer grounded out to third, driving in Reynolds to tie the game at 2-2. Macrides then reached on an error from the shortstop, scoring LiPani. Simoncelli followed up by reaching second on an error, moving Macrides to third and he would then score on a wild pitch, giving D'Youville a 4-1 lead.
The Pioneers would break the game open in the bottom of the second, scoring eight runs to take a 10-4 lead. In the bottom of the third, D'Youville added a run to get close the gap when Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) scored LiPani on a sac-fly to make the game 10-5.
Two more runs crossed the plate for Alfred State in the bottom of the third, increasing their lead to 12-5. D'Youville had runners on second and third with two outs in the top of the fifth when Numan-Ali came to bat again. He singled to left field to score Reynolds, followed by Hammer reaching on a fielder's choice, scoring LiPani from third and making the game 12-7. The Pioneers would add another run in the bottom of the sixth and go on to win the game 13-7.
Freshmen Hammer and Numan-Ali led the team with two RBI each in game one. Sophomores Macrides and Nick Stimpfel (Aquebogue, NY/Riverhead) each had two hits and LiPani had a team high three runs. Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) pitched 4.1 innings of relief, allowing three earned runs and striking out two.
As they did in game one, D'Youville was quick to score a run in game two. Like in game one, Macrides was the first Spartan on base in the game. Following his single, Macrides stole second to put himself in scoring position. Next, Simoncelli singled to score Macrides, making the score 1-0.
The Pioneers scored two runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-1 lead, adding another run in the bottom of the fourth to increase their lead to 3-1. The Spartans would come back in the top of the fifth to retake their lead. LiPani led off the inning with a walk followed by a single to Numan-Ali. The two would move into scoring position with a Hammer sac-bunt.
Macrides then singled to center field, scoring two and tying the game at three. After a stolen base and being moved to third, Macrides would score on a double from Stimpfel to give the Spartans the lead once again at 4-3.
In the next inning, Alfred State would regain their lead for good, adding two runs to go ahead at 5-4. They would tack on another run in the sixth, increasing the lead to 6-4 and going on to win by that score.
Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) pitched his first complete game of the season, allowing three earned runs and striking out four. Macrides led the team with two RBI and two runs while tying for the team lead with two hits.
The men will host Pitt.-Bradford for their next pair of games on Tuesday, April 19th at Coca-Cola Field. The doubleheader will begin at 1pm with game two to follow at 3:30pm. Tuesday will also be the team's senior day.
