West Seneca, NY – The D'Youville baseball team lost their single nine inning game on Wednesday afternoon to the Fredonia Blue Devils by the final score of 12-1.
The game remained scoreless through the first three innings. Fredonia then took over the game in the fourth and fifth innings, scoring a combined nine runs. They then tacked on three more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-0 lead over the Spartans.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Spartans broke up the Blue Devils shutout. Matt Guenther (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) was hit by a pitch with an out. A Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) double to right field moved both runners into scoring position, followed by a Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) fly out that led to an error on Fredonia's first baseman that scored Guenther.
That run would be the final of the game as the Spartans were defeated by Fredonia 12-1.
Both Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) and Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) continued to lead the team's offense by each collecting a pair of hits. Hammer recorded the other hit for the team while Guenther scored the lone run.
Pitchers Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) and Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) both were very strong in relief. Kabacinski went 2.1 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Burke allowed zero hits on his time on the mound.
The next doubleheader for the men comes next week as the Medaille Mavericks host the Spartans on Tuesday, April 18 at 1/3:30pm.
