Pack Sets Single Season Win Record with Victory Over Medaille

Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville baseball team split a conference doubleheader to the Medaille Mavericks on Tuesday afternoon, losing game one 17-5 but winning game two 6-5.

D'Youville began the first game by taking an early lead as a pair of errors allowed the Spartans to load the bases with no outs. Medaille would record back-to-back outs on a fielder's choice and strikeout before Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) came to the plate. Critelli reached base on an error by the Maverick's right fielder, allowing Mitchell Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) and Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) to score and give D'Youville a 2-0 lead.

Despite the early lead, the Spartans would surrender several runs to Medaille over the next few innings. The Mavericks scored eight runs in innings one through four to take an 8-2 lead. D'Youville would close the deficit in the fifth inning as the offense began to come to life.

With two outs, Brackna reached base on an error with Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) singling to follow. Michael LiPani (Inrondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) then walked to load the bases with Critelli up to bat again. He then doubled, clearing the bases and making the game 8-5.

However Medaille would get those runs back and then some in the bottom of the inning as five runners crossed the plate to make it a 13-5 game. They then added four runs in the sixth to go on to win the game 17-5.

Critelli led the team with three RBI while Brackna scored two runs with the Spartans had four different players record hits in the game. Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) allowed two earned runs and struck out three in the start.

Game two of the day saw the Spartans again score two runs to begin the game. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off the game with a single. Mason then reached base on a fielder's choice, followed by Brackna reaching on an error. Macrides then came to bat and drove both home with a double to give the team a 2-0 lead.

Medaille would score a run in the first, second and fourth innings to take a 3-2 lead. The Spartans would then erase that lead in the top of the fifth, with Haak again leading off by reaching base. Mason singled followed by a single from Brackna to score Haak and tie the game at 3-3. Macrides then grounded out to short, scoring Mason and giving D'Youville a 4-3 lead. A single from Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) then followed, scoring Brackna and increased the D'Youville lead to 5-3.

The Mavericks, however, would continue to chip away as they scored in the fifth and sixth innings, tying the game at 5-5. In the top of the seventh, the Spartans were able to take the lead for good.

With no one on and two outs, Mulligan came to bat and blasted a go-ahead solo home run to give the Spartans a 6-5 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) came in to pitch and slammed the door shut, allowing no runs in the final three innings for his first save of the season and helped give the team a 6-5 victory.

Pitcher Will Pack (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) made history with the win, becoming the Spartan's single-season win record holder with his fourth of the season. Over 6.0 innings, Pack allowed four earned runs. Siegmann was outstanding in relief, allowing just one hit in 3.0 innings and struck out three for his first career collegiate save.

On offense, Mulligan had two RBI, including the game winning run on his second home run of the season. Macrides led the team with three RBI, while Haak had a team high four hits. Brackna and Mason each had two runs scored and a hit, while Critelli added a hit.

The next doubleheader for D'Youville comes tomorrow, April 19 as the Spartans host Keuka at 2/4:30pm.
