Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville baseball team suffered a pair of losses on Saturday afternoon, losing to the La Roche Redhawks 10-3 and 13-0.
Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off the first game with single and moved to second on a Mitchell Mason (Eden, NY/Eden) groundout. Next up, Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) singled to drive in Haak and give the Spartans a 1-0 lead after one.
The Redhawks responded in the second, third and fourth innings, scoring 10 runs to take a 10-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, D'Youville was able to earn back a pair of runs. With one out, Mason walked with a Brackna run to follow. Two batters later, Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) singled to score Mason and Brackna, making the game the final score of 10-3.
Brackna led the team with three hits in the game, with four other players tallying one each. One of those hits came from Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden), who also earned a walk. The three runs in the game came from the team's top three batters. Braden Bova (Lancaster, NY/Saint Mary's) pitched his first complete game, going 6.0 innings. He allowed seven earned runs and struck out two.
Game number two was all La Roche early. They scored six runs in the bottom of the first, followed by three runs in the bottom of the fourth. The Redhawks then added a run in each of the sixth and seventh innings, followed by two more in the eighth to win the game 13-0.
Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) recorded the lone hit for the Spartans in the game. Both Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richland) and Anthonly Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) pitched four innings, allowing a combined five earned runs.
The next doubleheader for the Spartans comes on Tuesday, April 25 as D'Youville hosts Keuka at 2/4:30pm.
