Lions Take Two from Spartans

West Seneca, NY – The D'Youville baseball team suffered a pair of losses to the visiting Penn State-Behrend Lions on Wednesday afternoon with the scores of 16-4 and 11-2.

After the Lions scored eight runs in the first two innings, the Spartans answered back with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) led off the bottom of the inning with his first homer of the year, clearing the left field fence. After the bases were loaded with a walk, error and single, Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) walked to bring home a run, making the game 8-2.

Behrend would add five runs through the next three innings, taking a 13-2 lead. In the bottom of the fifth, Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off with a single. In the next at-bat, he moved to third and scored after an error allowed Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) to reach base. Three batters later, Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) singled through the left side, scoring Brackna to make the game 13-4.

In the top of the seventh, the Lions hit back-to-back home runs to make the game 16-4. They would shutout the Spartans in the bottom of the inning and win the game by the same score.

Haak led the team with three hits in the game, adding a run scored. All four runs were scored by different players, with four different players recording a hit. Anthony Oliveri (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) pitched 3.2 innings of relief, striking out three. Haak pitched 2.0 innings and allowed just four hits. Matt Guenther (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) got his first career start at second in the game.

The Lions offense remained hot into game two. They scored in each of the first five innings for an 8-0 lead. In the sixth inning, the Spartans didn't allow a run to Behrend and scored their first run of the game.

With one out, Haak walked followed by a walk to LiPani. A double from Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) then scored Haak, making the game 8-1. The Lions would then score three in to top of the next inning, making it 11-1.

Macrides was able to pick up his second RBI of the day in the bottom of the eighth. With two outs, LiPani singled to left. A single from Brackna then moved LiPani to third, followed by a single from Macrides to score LiPani and bring the game to its final score of 11-2.

Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richland) made the start, going 3.0 innings and allowing just two earned runs. The veteran right hander struck out three and allowed only four hits. Justin Uhteg (Aracde, NY/Pioneer) went 4.0 innings with four earned runs allowed. Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) and Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) pitched the eighth and ninth innings, each allowing a hit but no runs. Kabacinski also struck out two.

Six players each had hits in the second game, with Macrides leading the way with three. He also drove in both runs.

The next pair of games for the Spartans comes this Saturday, April 29 as they host the Mount Aloysius Mounties at 1 and 3:30pm.
