Houghton, NY – The D'Youville baseball team concluded their 2017 season on Tuesday afternoon, falling to the Alfred State Pioneers in back-to-back games by the final scores of 16-6 and 8-5.
D'Youville took the lead early in game one, putting three runs on the board in the second inning. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) began the inning with a walk and moved to second in the next at-bat. Then Kevin Kabacinski (Buffalo, NY/St. Joe's) doubled to score Macrides, making the score 1-0. Back-to-back walks to Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) and Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spirng-Ford) loaded the bases for Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home), who reached on a throwing error to score Kabacinski. Two batters later, Michael LiPani (Irondequoit, NY/Irondequoit) singled to score Critelli and made the score 3-0.
In the bottom of the inning, Alfred State would score four runs to take the lead. They then added two in the bottom of the third, sixth in the bottom of the fourth, one in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of the sixth to reach their total of 16.
The Spartans scored a run in the top of the fourth as Hammer hit a sac-fly to score Cirtelli from third for the team's fourth run. In the top of the sixth, Critelli again scored a run after coaxing his third walk of the game on a Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) sac-fly. LiPani then singled in the following at-bat, scoring Louis Reynolds (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame) from third, who reached earlier in the inning on a single. The game would end in the next inning with the final score of 16-6.
LiPani led the team with two hits in the game and tied for the team lead in RBI with two along with Hammer. Critelli had a team high three runs scored and three walks, while six Spartans each had hits. Four pitchers saw action on the mound, with Haak pitching the final inning and allowing no hits or runs over 1.0 inning, striking out two.
Alfred State was able to get on the board first in game two of the doubleheader. The Pioneers scored one run each the bottom of the first and third innings, adding two and four runs in the bottom of the fourth and fifth innings.
The final two innings were where the Spartans started to get into an offensive groove. Hammer led off the inning with a single, followed by a Reynolds walk. Both runners advanced in the next at-bat, with Hammer scoring an at-bat later from a Haak RBI.
Macrides started off the sixth with his second home run of the season, making the score 8-2. Three straight singles to the outfield loaded the bases for Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga), who hit double down the left field line to score Hammer and Critelli, making the score 8-4. The team's scoring run was capped off by Haak's third RBI of the day as he grounded out, scoring Reynolds. Alfred was able to bring a halt to the Spartan in the offense in the seventh inning, going on to win the game 8-5.
Numan-Ali and Haak led the team with two RBI each in the game, while Hammer had a team high three hits and two runs. The bottom seven hitters each registered at least a hit for the Spartans, including one from Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale). Haak started game two, allowing three earned runs and struck out five over 5.0 innings. Kabacinski came in to close out the game with an inning of work, allowing no hits, runs or walks.
