Houghton, NY – The D'Youville baseball team opened their season on Wednesday afternoon in a non-conference, nine inning game against the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers and lost by the final score of 16-4.
Bradford was first to get on the board as they scored a pair of runs in the first inning to make it 2-0. The Panthers then added three runs in the bottom of the second, a run in the bottom of the fourth and three more in the bottom of the fifth.
D'Youville was able get on the board in the sixth inning, making a big dent in the Panther lead. Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) led off the inning with a double to left field. Two batters later, Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) pinched hit, reaching base on a single to the shortstop. In the next at-bat, Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) singled to center field, loading the bases with one out.
Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) came to the plate and singled to left field, driving in Varney and Hammer to make the score 9-2. The next batter, Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech), was hit by a pitch to again load the bases. With two outs, Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) hit a two-RBI single to center field, scoring Brackna and Macrides, making the score 9-4.
In the bottom of the inning, Bradford got three of those runs back to make the score 12-4. Moving to the bottom of the seventh, the Panthers added four more runs – their final four runs of the game as they went on to win 16-4.
Burke and Macrides each had two RBI in the game, with Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew), Hammer, Brackna, Macrides, and Burke each tallying a hit. Varney led the team with two hits in his first collegiate game while Haak and Brackna each recoding two walks.
Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) got the opening day start for the Spartans, pitching two innings. Six other players pitched one inning in the game. Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) pitched the final inning for the Spartans recording two strikeouts and allowing just one hit with no runs. Bryce Little (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) had a successful debut for the Spartans, pitching one inning with one earned run and a strikeout.
The pair of games for D'Youville will come Saturday, March 10 as the team will play a doubleheader at Juniata beginning at 12:00pm.
