Huntingdon, PA – The D'Youville baseball team grabbed their first win in the second half of a doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to the Juniata Eagles in game one 4-2 and winning game two 7-3.
Following a scoreless first inning, the Spartans took the lead in the top of the second. Nicholas Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/Weset Scranton) led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on a passed ball. Two batters later, Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) walked followed by a Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) single to drive in Ivanoff and make the score 1-0. In the next at-bat, Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) singled as well, driving in Critelli to make the score 2-0.
Juniata would immediately answer back in the bottom of the inning. The Eagles would have back-to-back RBIs to tie the game, followed by a third RBI in the inning two batters later, taking a 3-2 lead.
It wasn't until the bottom of the eighth inning where the next run was scored. Unfortunately for the Spartans, that run came off the Juniata bats to extend their lead to 4-2. The Eagles would then hold on to win game one by the same score.
Sophomore pitcher Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) pitched a very strong game for the Spartans. He went 7.1 innings, allowing four earned runs. Adam Lampman (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) came in for 0.2 innings of relief, allowing no hits or runs.
At the plate, Burke led the team with two hits, adding an RBI. Varney accounted for the other RBI and was one of five Spartans to record a hit.
D'Youville again got on the board first in game two. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) began the game with a single, followed by a single from Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home). Two batters later, Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) stepped into the box and blasted his first home run of the season, giving the Spartans a 3-0 lead after one half inning.
In the bottom half of the inning, Juniata got a run back, but the Spartans got out of the first leading 3-1.
The Spartans added another run to their total in the top of the third. Hammer reached base with no outs, followed by a double from Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) to bring Hammer home for a 4-1 lead. However in the bottom of the inning, Juniata once again got a run back and the score was 4-2 after three.
With the Spartans still leading at the top of the fifth, they added onto their lead. With two outs in the top of the inning, Ivanoff singled, followed by a single from Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech). Mulligan's single moved Ivanoff to third, where he would score on a double in the next at-bat from Critelli to make the score 5-2.
Burke would then walk to load the bases, leading to Varney coming up to bat. Varney then singled, driving in Mulligan and growing D'Youville's lead to 6-2. The score would then be trimmed to 6-3 as the Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the inning.
Down to their final out in the top of the sixth, the Spartans again got a runner on base to keep the inning alive. Macrides singled and then stole second to put himself in scoring position. Ivanoff then came up, doubling to bring home Macrides and make the score 7-3.
Meanwhile, Will Pack (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) was pitching an outstanding game. After pitching six innings, Critelli came in and closed the door and D'Youville went on to win the game 7-3.
Pack picked up where he left off last season, going 6.0 innings and striking out eight for his first win of the season. At the plate, Macrides led the team by going 2-4 with three RBI, two runs scored, a stolen base, and a home run. Varney added two hits along with Hammer while Ivanoff recorded a team high three hits.
The next series of games for the Spartans will come next weekend. D'Youville will travel to Maryland to play St. Mary's on Saturday, March 17 at 1:00pm and 3:45pm. They will then stay the night and play on Sunday at 12:00pm before heading home.
