D'Youville Swept by Medaille in Conference Opener

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville baseball team opened up the conference portion of their 2018 schedule on Friday afternoon, falling to the Medaille Mavericks by the final scores of 3-2 and 10-7.

D'Youville was able to strike first in game one of the doubleheader. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off the bottom of the first by reaching on an error by the Medaille third baseman. Two batters later, Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) reached on a single, moving Haak to third. The first run for the Spartans would cross the plate in the next at-bat as Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) singled to score Haak and advance Brackna to second. After the second out of the inning, Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) also singled to score Brackna, giving D'Youville a 2-0 lead.

Medaille answered back in the top of the second, tying the game with two runs. It wasn't until the fifth inning until the next run was scored, but it came off the bats of the Mavericks as they increased their lead to 3-2. After two runs in the first inning, the Spartans would go quiet at the plate and lose game one of the doubleheader 3-2.

Brackna led the team by going 3-3 in the game with one run scored. Four other Spartans recorded a hit, with Macrides and Mulligan picking up the RBIs. On the mound, Will Pack (Pendleton, NY/Starpoint) went 4.1 innings, allowing one earned run. In relief, Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) was very effective with 2.2 innings pitched, surrendering no hits, no runs, and no walks with two strikeouts.

Game two of the doubleheader again saw the Spartans get on the board first, this time opening the scoring in the second inning. Macrides reached base on a single to begin the inning, but he would be called out on a fielder's choice as Nicholas Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) reached base. Mulligan then walked when Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) reached on an error two batters later, scoring Ivanoff and moving Mulligan to third. Mulligan then scored on a passed ball during the next at-bat, giving D'Youville a 2-0 lead.

In the top of the third, Medaille would take the lead with three runs before the Spartans were able to tie it in the bottom of the inning after Haak led off with a triple, followed by a Macrides RBI triple. The scoring continued into the bottom of the fourth where Burke walked with two outs. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) then recorded a bunt single, followed by Haak singling to load the bases.

All three runners advanced on a balk from the Medaille pitcher, scoring Burke. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) walked to load the bases again, followed by another walk to Brackna, forcing in another run and D'Youville led 5-3 after four innings.

Two more runs were tacked on by the Spartans in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Hammer reached base after he was hit by a pitch. Brackna was then hit by a pitch to put two runners on with two outs. Macrides was the next batter and he hit his second triple of the game, scoring both Hammer and Brackna to make the lead 7-3 D'Youville.

Despite falling behind by four runs, Medaille was able to come right back. They scored seven runs in the final three innings and went on to take game two 10-7.

Haak and Macrides each had two hits for the Spartans, with Macrides leading the team with three RBI. Seven different players scored a run for the team and five different players each recorded a walk. Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) added a hit for the second straight game while Numan-Ali recorded his first hit of the season.

Ivanoff got the start on the mound and went 6.2 innings, striking out two. Haak came in for 2.1 innings of relief and took the loss in the game.

The next doubleheader for the men comes quickly as they travel to play at Mount Aloysius on Saturday, March 31. Game one against the Mounties begins at 1:00pm.
