Cresson, PA – The D'Youville baseball team dropped their second straight conference doubleheader Saturday afternoon, falling to the Mount Aloysius Mounties 7-6 and 15-2.
Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) led off game one with a double. After a sac-bunt from Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) moved him to third, and Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) grounded out to the shortstop and scored Haak, giving the Spartans a 1-0 lead.
The Mounties would then answer with one run in each of the first three innings, but D'Youville scored a run in the top of the fourth. Brackna led off with a single and then scored in the next at-bat as Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) reached base, bringing the score to 3-2 in favor of the Mounties. In the bottom half of the inning Mount Aloysius would make up that run by scoring another, making the score 4-1 after four innings.
In the fifth, the Spartans added another run to chip away at the Mounties lead. Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) doubled with one out, followed by walks to Haak and Varney to load the bases. Brackna then walked to force in a run, bringing the D'Youville deficit to 4-2.
Continuing to add runs, the Spartans took the lead in the sixth. Nicholas Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) led off with a single, followed by a single from Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) to put two on with no outs. Josh Hammer (Amherst, NY/Sweet Home) moved both runners into scoring position with a sac-bunt. Then, Burke singled to score Ivanoff and Mulligan, tying the game at 4-4.
Devon Kelly (Rochester, NY/Olympia) then singled to move Burke to second, and Haak then reached on an error to load the bases. Varney then came to bat and hit a sac-fly to center field deep enough to score Burke and the Spartans led over the Mounties 6-4.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, Mount Aloysius scored a pair in the bottom of the second to tie it up. That tie would last into extra innings when the Mounties loaded the bases with no outs. After D'Youville recorded their first out of the inning, the Mounties would single to score the game winning run, defeating the Spartans 7-6 in game one.
Burke led the team in hits and runs in the game going 3-4 and scoring two runs. He and Brackna led the team with two RBI each while six total Spartans accounted for a hit each. Tyler Siegmann (Wheatfield, NY/Niagara-Wheatfield) went 6.2 innings in the game, allowing six earned runs. Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) came in and pitched 0.2 innings, allowing one earned run and took the loss.
Mount Aloysius was strong on offense in game two of the doubleheader. They scored six runs combined in the second and third innings before the Spartans could get their first run on the board. Macrides led off the fourth with a double and moved to third in the next at-bat. Mulligan was then able to drive in Macrides from third on a sac-fly, making the score 6-1.
Two runs were scored by the Mounties in the bottom of the fourth to expand their lead to 8-1. The Spartans added a run in the fifth after Haak reached on an error and Brackna doubled to bring him in. However Mount Aloysius scored four in the bottom of the fifth and three in the bottom of sixth to take the game by the final score of 15-2.
Six different Spartans recorded hits in the game. Haak and Macrides accounted for both runs, with Critelli walking twice. Adam Lampman (West Seneca, NY/West Seneca West) go the start in the game, going 3.0 innings. Andrew Holcomb (Elma, NY/Iroquois), Steve Vik (Hopkins, SC/Lower Richland), and Braden Bova (Lancaster, NY/St. Mary's) all saw time in relief.
