Lewiston, NY – The D'Youville baseball team got into a slugfest on Friday afternoon, falling to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats 24-18 in game one and lost 5-1 in game two.
Greensburg began the game with a two-run homer to take a quick 2-0 lead in the game. D'Youville answered right back with a bang with their highest scoring inning of the game.
The bases were loaded with one out for the Spartans as Patrick Mulligan (Buffalo, NY/Hutch Tech) grounded out to third, scoring Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta). Nicholas Ivanoff (Scranton, PA/West Scranton) then doubled to clear the bases and score two runs, giving D'Youville a 3-2 lead. The next two batters reached base to load the bases once again before Devon Kelly (Rochester, NY/Olympia) walked to drive in another, increasing the lead 4-2. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) came up for the second time in the inning and made the most of his second plate appearance, hitting his first career home run and first career grand slam to double the D'Youville lead to 8-2 after one inning.
Two more runs were scored by the Bobcats in the second, but the Spartans came back with two runs in the bottom half of the inning. Doubles from Ivanoff and Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford) each drove in runs to keep the six-run lead at 10-4.
A seven-run inning from Greensburg saw them take the lead at 11-10, but the Spartans answered again. Haak came to bat with a runner on and hit his second home run of the game to regain the lead. With two on and two outs, Ivanoff came back up to bat and doubled a run home, followed by another double from Burke to drive in two more runs to lead 15-11 after three.
In the fourth inning, the Bobcats scored two more runs to cut their deficit to three. However D'Youville again scored in the bottom of the inning to build up their lead. With two on, Justin Brackna (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) tripled to score both runs and make it a 17-13 lead. Travis Macrides (Manlius, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) then drove in Brackna, giving the Spartan an 18-13 lead after four innings.
For the first time in the game, neither team would score in an inning as the fifth inning was scoreless. The Bobcats then scored seven runs in the sixth inning to take a two-run lead. D'Youville couldn't respond this time and Greensburg added four more runs in the seventh with no answer from the Spartans as Greensburg would come from behind and win game one 24-18.
Haak had an incredible game for the Spartans by going 3-5 with three runs scored, six RBI, and two home runs. Ivanoff went 4-4 with three runs and four RBI while Burke went 3-4 with a run scored and three RBI. Brackna went 3-5 with two RBI and a two runs scored. In total five Spartans had at least two hits and four players had two or more RBI.
Game two was a much lower scoring affair. D'Youville started the scoring in the bottom of the second as Renato Quinones (Amherst, NY/Saint Joe's) singled in Burke after he doubled with two outs. Burke's run gave D'Youville a 1-0 lead.
Unfortunately for the Spartans, that would be the only run they scored all game. Greensburg scored three runs in the top of the third to take the lead. They added a run in each of the fifth inning and ninth inning, going on to win the game 5-1.
Ivanoff went 6.0 innings in the game, giving up four earned runs and striking out two. Andrew Holcomb (Elma, NY/Iroquois) pitched 3.0 innings and allowed just three hits and one earned run.
Burke led the team by going 3-4 and scored the team's lone run. Haak, Brackna, Ivanoff and Quinones each had a hit.
The men will conclude their conference schedule tomorrow, April 28 as they play Hilbert beginning at 12:00pm.
