Buffalo, NY - The Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) released their baseball preseason poll with the D'Youville baseball team expected to fight for a spot in the playoffs.
D'Youville suffered a tough season in 2018, finishing tenth in the conference with a 1-17 record. Head coach Kyle McLain enters his first season as head coach and is joined on the coaching staff by Kris Kruszka and former player turned graduate assistant Travis Macrides. The team will have a large group of returners looking for improved success.
At the top of the lineup are senior outfielder/pitcher Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) and sophomore shortstop Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) as the two were pegged as players to watch. Haak is nearing the all-time hits record as he was and has been one of the best leadoff hitters in the conference for years. Meanwhile, Varney put together a strong freshman season as one of the team's top players in the field, and at the plate.
La Roche, the top team in the AMCC for the past several seasons, are one again pegged as the team to beat and expected to repeat as champs. Penn State-Behrend (2) and Pitt.-Greensburg (3) round out the top three - the same top three as last season.
The full preseason poll - including top 10 ranking, players to watch, and preseason awards - can be found on the AMCC website.
D'Youville will begin their season Tuesday, March 12 as they travel to play Houghton in a doubleheader beginning at 3:00pm.
