Spartans Drop Doubleheader to Mount Saint Joseph

Kissimmee, FL – The D'Youville baseball team took on Mount Saint Joseph on Saturday morning in a doubleheader, losing game one 12-2 and falling in game two 11-2.

D'Youville was on the board early against the Lions in game one, striking in the first inning. Dylan Haak (Depew, NY/Depew) singled to begin the inning, then stealing second. A Renato Quinones (Lockport, NY/Saint Joe's) triple would then score Haak to make the game 1-0. In the next at-bat, Alex Liem (Dorchester, Ont./Dorchester Secondary) would hit a sac-fly to score Quinones as the Spartans led 2-0 through the first half inning of play.

The Lions would answer with two of their own runs in the bottom of the first to tie the game, then blowing the game open with six runs in the bottom of the second. They would tack one four more runs in the bottom of the third to bring their run total to 12 as they won the first game 12-2.

Haak led the team with two hits while Quinones, Connor Truitt (Rochester, NY/Early College), Brendan Burke (Collegeville, PA/Spring-Ford), Matt Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden), and Matt Guenther (Cheektowaga, NY/Maryvale) all tallied one. Quinones and Liem each picked up one RBI.

On the mound, Derek Mosher (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) got his first career start. Nick Jank (Orchard Park, NY/Canisius) pitched 2.2 innings of relief with one strikeout. Shane Critelli (Camden, NY/Camden) was excellent with one inning pitched, allowing just two hits. Burke also was outstanding with one inning of relief, allowing just one hit and striking out two.

Game two proved to be a similar outcome as game one. The Lions scored a pair of runs in the top of third to lead 2-0. In the bottom of the inning, Haak tripled with one out and was driven in on the next play on a Justin Varney (Henrietta, NY/Rush-Henrietta) groundout to cut the Mount Saint Joseph lead in half.

Over the next four innings, the Lions would take control of the game. They scored an additional nine runs to take a commanding 11-1 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh. Truitt walked to begin the inning, followed by a Kevin Sanders (Buffalo, NY/City Honors) walk two batters later. Khaled Numan-Ali (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) would then walk to load the bases. Two batters later, Haak would single up the middle to score Truitt. That would be the final run of the game as the Spartans fell 11-2.

Haak led the team with three hits, followed by Quinones, Matt Critelli, and Sanders with a hit each. Haak and Varney each tallied RBI. Matt Critelli got the start, going three innings and allowing just three hits and two earned runs. Burke pitched well with 2.1 innings of work, allowing just three hits. Liem chipped in with 0.2 innings and Shane Critelli went one inning, allowing two hits.

The next game for the men comes tomorrow, March 17 as they play Central at 10:30am.
