Buffalo, NY- This season the D'Youville Spartans look to build on the valuable experience gained during the 2012-13 season. Sixty percent of the team's points were scored last season by freshmen guards Jon Gemerek (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) and Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Walsh). Gemerek led all AMCC freshmen in scoring while teammate Clarke was third in the conference. These two players will be expected to anchor a deep guard corps that will see multiple players get double figure minutes.
"Now that our guards have 25 games of college basketball under their belts, we will be picking up the pace of the game," said third year Head Coach Earl Schunk. "We look to take advantage of our depth at the guard spots and our overall team speed and quickness."
Senior point guard Jake Maryniewski (Depew, NY/Depew) was second in the conference in both steals and assists last season, and third-year big man Julian Reed (Buffalo, NY/Union-Endicott) was second in blocked shots. Both have added offensive aggressiveness and will be counted on to put up points.
Senior forward Anthony Wiechec (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) is a solid inside presence, and last season's most improved player Kyle Clarke (Olean, NY/Olean) are expected to provide veteran leadership for the young Spartans who have 11 sophomores and freshmen among their 15 players.
Sophomore Nate Sweetman (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) is a versatile guard-forward who can play four positions, while sophomore Conor Gallivan (Elma, NY/Iroquois) contributed solid minutes at both guard spots. They will be joined in a deep backcourt by three newcomers: Anthony Malone (Erie, PA/Mercyhurst Prep), Matt Insley (Wellsville, NY/Wellsville) and Daryl Herring (Buffalo, NY/Cardinal O'Hara). Malone and Insley were leaders of immensely successful teams in high school, while Herring is an emerging talent. All three are expected to be a large part of the backcourt rotation.
The frontcourt has been bolstered by two returners that missed much or all of last season due to injury. Corey Mis (North Tonawanda, NY/North Tonawanda) missed the entire season and his presence on the boards will be welcomed. Brandon Gullo (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) played well in limited action after missing the first semester last season and will be counted on to bolster the forwards. Newcomer Stefan Krna (Alexander, NY/Alexander) is a solid inside presence with a nice shooting touch and will contribute as the season unfolds.
Look for a fast, exciting style of play from the Spartans, who have adopted the motto, "RUN DYC" for the season.
The Spartans begin their season on November 15 at the Chuck Resler Tournament in Rochester, NY against Tufts University at 3:00 p.m.
