Pittsburgh, PA- A solid first-half half of play by the D'Youville men's basketball team was negated by hot second-half shooting from the opponent and the Spartans were defeated at La Roche College 98-69.
Jon Gemerek (Depew, NY/Depew) was the top D'Youville scorer for the second-straight game. Today the sophomore guard was 7-15 from the floor and scored a team-high 15 points. Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Olean) added 12 points and Julian Reed (Cheektowaga, NY/Union-Endicott) chipped in 11 points.
The first 20 minutes were closely contested with the teams battling to four ties and six lead changes.
The Spartans opened the game strong taking an early 9-6 lead on five points from Marcus Clarke and a Gemerek layup. But D'Youville went scoreless the over the next 2:22 and a La Roche 9-0 run put the hosts on top.
D'Youville clawed their way back into the game after four more points from Gemerek and four from Reed that included a dunk. The Spartans took a 30-27 lead with 7:30 left to play in the first-half and that would be the their last lead in the game.
D'Youville had another scoring drought, this one lasting just over three minutes, and La Roche scored the next 12-straight points and never looked back.
La Roche led 43-35 at the half and shot a blistering 56.4% in the second-half to keep the Spartans out of contention.
D'Youville closes the 2013 portion of the schedule tomorrow (Dec. 15) with an AMCC game at Franciscan University. Start time in Steubenville, Ohio is at 1:00 p.m.
