Buffalo, NY-Men's basketball opened the 2014 portion of the schedule with a hot shooting first-half but visiting Pitt-Bradford also caught fire to match the Spartans and then overtook them in the second-half to win 100-78.
Four Spartans finished the game in double-figures led by Julian Reed (Cheektowaga, NY/Union-Endicott) with 16 points. Reed also finished with a team-high seven rebounds and a game-high four blocked shots. Sophomore guard Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh) chipped in 15 points.
The Spartans also received offensive contributions from new sources today. Senior forward Anthony Wiechec (Buffalo, NY/St. Francis) dropped in a career-high 12 points. Wiechec was 6-8 from the field and added six rebounds and a blocked shot. Second-year guard Nate Sweetman (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) added a season-high 10 points.
Point guard Jake Maryniewski (Depew, NY/Depew) dished a game-high seven assists and has 20 dimes over his last two games.
D'Youville led by as many as 14 in the first-half and then Pitt-Bradford started their hot stretch. The Panthers went on a 15-0 run over a 3:40 span and closed the first-half outscoring the Spartans 24-6 over the last 5:16 of the frame to take a three-point lead into the locker room.
In the first-half D'Youville was 19-32 from the floor (59.4%) and 9-11 (81.1%) from the free-throw line. Marcus Clarke and Wiechec scored 10 points apiece.
The Spartans scored the first bucket of the second-half on a layup from Wiechec to get to within one and that was as close as they would come. Bradford answered with a 10-2 run to distance themselves and never looked back.
