Rochester, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team lost their second game of the weekend on Saturday afternoon as the Spartans were defeated by the Keuka Wolfpack at the Harold J. Brodie Tournament at RIT by the final of 87-83.
Just over 2 minutes into the contest, D'Youville had a 7-2 lead Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) sank a pair of free throws. The Wolfpack then answered with 10 unanswered points to take a 12-10 lead. Throughout the first 10 minutes of the half, as one team began to pull away, the other would get right back in.
Down 3 with 8:28 to go in the first half, Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) scored 6 consecutive points for D'Youville and the Spartans trailed Keuka 29-27. The two teams continued to battle for the remainder of the half and D'Youville took the lead with 3:30 remaining thanks to Jon Gemerek (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) free throw. The Wolfpack would tie it up with 1:20 to go and the two teams would head into halftime tied at 40.
Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh Academy) started to find his scoring touch to start the second half, scoring 2 baskets in less than 15 seconds to give D'Youville a 44-40 lead. D'Youville would hold their lead for the first 4 minutes of the half when Keuka tied the game at 49 all with 15:36 remaining in the game.
The Spartans once again regained the lead off a Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) three-pointer but the Wolfpack once again tied it up two possessions later. Keuka then took over the lead from D'Youville but never had more than a 6 point lead. With just 40 seconds to go in the game, Clarke made a layup and the Spartans trailed by 2. However, Keuka scored on their next possession to get their lead back up to 3. A late scramble nearly had D'Youville within a point, but the Spartans ultimately fell to Keuka by the final of 87-83.
"It was a tough loss because we saw the victory in front of us and couldn't quite finish it off," said Head Coach Earl Schunk.
Zach Blask made the All-Tournament team after averaging 18.5 PPG in the two games, including 19 points on Saturday. He also added 7 rebounds, a season high. Jon Gemerek was the team's leading scorer with 20 points. Gemerek contributed in all areas of the game, grabbing 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals.
The team's leading scorer, Marcus Clarke, scored 9 points after getting in early foul trouble. Senior co-captain Nate Sweetman (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) brought in a team high 9 rebounds to go with 3 assists and 2 steals. He contributed 4 points as well.
Moving forward, Coach Schunk wants his team to learn from these types of games to help win future games.
"These are the kind of games we will look back on as a building block for our later success."
The men will play next on Tuesday, November 24th as they host Alfred State at 4pm for their home opener.
