Bradford, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team saw their game winning streak end on Thursday evening after falling to the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers by the final score of 77-62.
Pitt.-Bradford controlled the game early on, jumping out to an early 9-2 lead after 3:47 of basketball. The Spartans battled back to pull within 1 after a Nate Sweetman (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) made free throw but Bradford scored 2 more baskets to regain a 5-point lead.
Freshman Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) made a layup with 10:54 remaining in the first half to cut Bradford's lead to 14-10. Over the next 5:49, the Panthers would outscore the Spartans 18-2 and take a commanding 32-12 lead. Pitt.-Bradford would continue to keep a 20-point lead until there was 1:18 left in the first half when Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh Academy) made a three-pointer, cutting the deficit to 39-22. Bradford went into the lockerroom with a 44-26 lead over the Spartans.
D'Youville opened the second half very cold on offense. The team didn't score until a Jon Gemerek (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) layup with 17:04 left in the game and the Panthers had established a 54-28 lead. Clarke scored 10 consecutive points for the Spartans and closed the deficit to 20.
Pitt.-Bradford's offense was too much for D'Youville throughout the second half. With 4:20 left in the game, the Panthers had a 22-point lead over the Spartans. Neither team scored in the final 1:17 of the game as Bradford went on to the 77-62 victory over D'Youville.
"We came out flat and they punished us for that," said Head Coach Earl Schunk. "By the time we got it together we were down double-figures."
D'Youville's offense was carried by the team's seniors. Marcus Clarke led the team with 17 points, followed by 15 points from Jon Gemerek and 13 from Nate Sweetman. Conor Gallivan (Elma, NY/Iroquois) added 4 points off the bench. Clarke led the team with 4 steals and Gemerek added 5 rebounds.
Juan Miguel Rosales had a team high 8 rebounds while Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) had 5 points. Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) had a team high 3 assists to go with 2 points and 2 rebounds.
"We made a couple of runs in the second half but when you get down that far you need everything to go right," said Schunk. "Luckily we have another game in 2 days so we can get back at it."
The men will play again on Saturday, January 16th at Penn State-Altoona. Tip-off is at 1pm.
