Buffalo, NY – The Medaille Mavericks completed the season sweep over the D'Youville men's basketball team on Wednesday evening by the final score of 90-68.
The Spartans were out to an early 6-5 lead with layups coming from three different players, but Medaille would come back to double-up D'Youville and lead them 18-6 with 6:11 elapsed in the first half. Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Wheatfield) cut the deficit to 5 just over a minute later. The Mavericks would regain their cushion and led 27-13 with 8:48 left in the half.
D'Youville closed the gap to 9 with nearly 6 minutes left to play in the first but the Mavericks would once again turn on the offense. With 2:18 left in the half, Medaille held a 12-point lead and would go into halftime with the same 12-point lead, leading the Spartans 41-29.
Medaille began the second half and delivered two big blows to the Spartan's comeback hopes with back-to-back threes. Sophomore Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) hit 2 threes of his own paired with a Jon Gemerek (Cheektowaga, NY/Depew) layup and D'Youville was back to within 12 points.
Blask hit another three with 14:53 left in the game and the team was within 8 points of Medaille's lead. Just over 4 minutes later, the Mavericks would open up their largest lead of the game at 66-46. The Spartan's struggles continued when Medaille reached a 26-point lead with 6:49 to go in the game and put the game out of reach. Marcus Clarke (Olean, NY/Archbishop Walsh Academy) and Andrew Steele (Lakewood, OH/Lakewood) scored 5 late points for D'Youville but the Mavericks were too far ahead and won the game by the final of 90-68.
"We need to play more consistently, and it's on me to get us there," said Head Coach Earl Schunk.
Zach Blask led the team in scoring Wednesday evening with 15 points and also dished out a team high 5 assists. In his first start of the season, freshman Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) grabbed a season high 10 rebounds and added 8 points. Off the bench, Marcus Clarke added 12 points, 2 rebounds and an assist. Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) added 7 rebounds in the game.
Coach Schunk knows that the season is entering crunch time and his team needs to step it up.
"We still have a reasonable shot at the last playoff spot, but we have no time to waste," said Schunk. "Tonight was hopefully an anomaly."
D'Youville will stay on the road for their next game on Saturday, February 6th at Mount Aloysius. The game begins at 1pm.
