Spartans Lose Close Game to Hawks

Hamburg, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team was unable to extend their conference winning streak on Monday evening as they lost to the host Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 92-86.

D'Youville was sharp from long distance early on in the game. After taking a 4-3 lead, the Spartans hit back-to-back-to-back threes to go up over the Hawks 13-5. Hilbert worked their way back into the game to trail 17-15 but then took over the lead after 8:20 of play at 18-17. They then extended their lead to 26-17 after a 14-0 run on the Spartans with 9:06 to go in the first.

A Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) cut the deficit to five with a made three, but the Hawks pushed their lead back up to 10 with 6:28 remaining in the first. Back to within seven after a Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) jumper, Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) scored six of the final 10 points of the half for D'Youville and the Spartans went into the half trailing 46-45.

The Spartans wasted no time in taking the lead back in the second half as Blask drilled a three with 0:11 elapsed on the clock and that began the team's control on the game. For the next 7:10, D'Youville maintained an advantage over Hilbert until the Hawks tied the game at 63-63. Hilbert was then able to retake the lead until Blask tied the game at 69-69 with 10:05 remaining in the game.

Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) reestablished the D'Youville the lead before the teams traded the lead four times in the next 1:16 and Hilbert went up by two with 8:30 to go. Tied at 78-78 with 3:39 left on the clock, the Hawks took the lead and did not give it back. D'Youville was close to regaining the lead by trailing 83-82, but Hilbert held on the rest of the way and won the game by the final of 92-86.

"We competed very well in a tough back and forth game," said head coach Earl Schunk. "Hilbert made some big shots in the last couple minutes that decided the game. We are really close  to being where we need to be, but we need to tighten up on the little thins that decide close games. We will ge there, hopefully very soon."

VanDuluitgaarden led the team in scoring, as well as collecting his second double-double of the season. He scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to go with his four assists and two steals. Juniors Blask and Kunelius both scored 15 points and grabbed three rebounds. Blask tied for the team lead with five assists and Kunelius' 15 points were the top for the team's reserve players.

Coming off his career high in points last game, Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) scored 10 points, with Rosales adding 12 points and six rebounds off the bench. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) scored six points with six rebounds and five points. Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) scored seven points to go with his three rebounds.

The next game for the men will come in the new year as they host Houghton on Tuesday, January 3rd at 6pm.
