D'Youville Can't Overcome Lions Second Half Lead in Loss

Erie, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a loss the Penn State-Behrend Lions Wednesday evening by the final score of 92-77.

Behrend led early over the Spartans by the score of 8-4. At the 13:29 mark of the first, the Lions increased their lead to 12-6 over D'Youville before the Spartans closed the gap to three after a Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) made three. The Lions were able to go back up by eight with 8:49 left in the half as they led D'Youville 19-11.

D'Youville fell behind 26-14 with 6:51 remaining in the half before they really began to get in an offensive groove. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) converted an and-one followed by a Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) made three to trim the deficit to six. The Spartans then pulled to within three at 28-25 after another Blask three. That three sparked Blask scoring 11 of the final 13 D'Youville points for the remainder of the half as the Spartans went into the half trailing 39-35.

The Lions came out in the second half and immediately put distance between themselves and the Spartans. However their 10-point lead after 2:30 of play was brought back down to three after a Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) made layup. D'Youville kept the game close and eventually tied the game at 51-51 with 13:22 to go in the game on a Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia Mumford) made three-pointer.

After tying the game with the Lions, D'Youville went down by 14 just over five minutes later. Hartzog made it a 10-point game again at 72-62, but the Behrend lead was back up to 15 with 3:05 left in the game. The Spartans put in a strong effort but were unable to overcome the Lions, falling by the final score of 92-77.

"We did a lot of good things, especially on the defensive end," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We had a couple of dead periods where we didn't score and they made us pay."

The team had four players in double-figures for scoring. Blask led the team with 18 points, followed by Hartzog with 13 points. Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) recorded a double-double with 12 points and a team high 10 rebounds. VanDuluitgaarden nearly recorded a double-double of his own with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Bayani Salinas (Antioch, CA/Antioch) led the team with four assists while Heard scored eight points off the bench. Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City/Guatemala/Village School) scored six points with three rebounds off the bench.

The men will next play the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats on Saturday, January 28 at 3pm.
