Spartan Men Defeat Bobcats for Second Time

Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team defeated the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats for the second time this season on Saturday afternoon by the final score of 83-70.

The two teams traded the lead four times in the first five minutes of play, with the Bobcats leading 9-5. Baskets from Patrick Plummer (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) and Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) allowed the Spartans to pull back within to three points at 12-9. The two teams began to pick up their scoring as D'Youville tied the game at 17-17 with just over 10 to go after a Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) free throw.

Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) helped give D'Youville the lead with six straight points, followed by four straight points from Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) for a 27-22 lead. Greensburg then tied the game at 27-27 before the Spartans would go on a 14-2 scoring run and take a 41-29 lead with 2:25 to go in the half. That D'Youville lead would continue through the remainder of the half as the Spartans led at half 43-31.

Pitt.-Greensburg opened up the second half by closing the gap between the two teams. They brought the game to a difference of six before D'Youville would go back up by 10 3:23 into the second half. The Spartans would maintain their lead over the next several minutes before the Bobcats would again make the game close as they pulled to within five with 12:21 to go in the game.

As the second half went on, Greensburg went on a 10-2 scoring run to retake the lead with just under six minutes remaining in the game. However, D'Youville immediately took the lead right back on a Blask three-pointer. Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored five straight points as part of the team's 10-0 run and they took control of the game. Hartzog hit five free throws in the final minute to clinch the game as D'Youville defeated Greensburg by the final of 83-70.

"I was proud of the way we came back after Greensburg took the lead," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We knew they would come back at us, but we showed a lot of poise and heart. We made big shots, and got some key defensive stops to finish out the game."

The men had four players scoring in double-figures. VanDuluitgaarden had an exceptional all-around game. He tied for the team lead with 16 points but led the team with seven rebounds and six assists with three blocks and three steals. Socha, Rosales and Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia Mumford) each had six rebounds, with Socha scoring 16 points.

Blask and Rosales each had 13 points in the game, with Blask dishing out five assists. Hartzog added nine points. Each of the 12 players that saw time for the Spartans recorded at least a rebound, with each of the five starters grabbing at least three.

D'Youville will next host Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday, February 1 at 8pm.
