Steubenville, OH – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a loss Saturday afternoon to the host Franciscan Barons by the final score of 80-70.
The teams traded leads in the first three minutes of play before Franciscan took a 14-10 lead at the 15:05 mark. Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) hit a three with a layup to follow that gave D'Youville a 17-16 lead nearly two minutes later. Over the next several minutes, the Spartans would begin to build a lead with a Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) and-one, going up six over the Barons.
Franciscan would come back to retake the lead, but the Spartans would take it right back on their next possession. After trading the lead, the Barons tied the game at 29-29 with 6:29 left in the half before Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) three that gave the Spartans a three-point lead. The Barons would tie the game once again to tie the game at 34-34, but D'Youville would close out the half strong, taking a 42-38 lead into the half.
Over the first three minutes of the second half, Franciscan closed the gap and tied the game at 46-46. They then took the lead by five, but Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) hit a three to close the deficit to two about three minutes later.
With under 10 on the clock the Barons attempted to pull away from the Spartans, but D'Youville held firm and stayed to within two. However, Franciscan went on a 10-0 scoring run after the Spartans pulled to within two and took a 70-58 with 3:09 remaining in the game. The Franciscan lead was too much for D'Youville to overcome and the Spartans would fall to the Barons by the final of 80-70.
Heard led all D'Youville scorers with 14 points in the game. Hartzog and Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Oneida, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) added 11 points. Off the bench, Nwaekeke had an outstanding effort on the glass, grabbing a season high 16 rebounds with 10 points for his first career double-double.
Off the bench, Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored seven points with eight rebounds. Zach Blask (Portville, NY/Portville) chipped in with nine points and led the team in assists.
The next game for the men comes this Wednesday, February 15 at Medaille. Game time is set for 8pm.
