VanDuluitgaarden Named to All-Tournament Team in Loss to Cobleskill

Rochester, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team closed out their weekend at the Harold J. Brodie Tournament at RIT on Sunday afternoon, falling to the SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tigers 98-82.

Cobleskill led in the first several minutes of the game before the Spartans scored on back-to-back possessions, taking a 9-6 lead. That lead increased to five as Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored his second consecutive layup, giving D'Youville an 11-6 lead after five minutes. The Fighting Tigers then went on a 9-0 scoring run against the Spartans to take a 15-11 lead with 6:18 off the clock in the first.

A three from Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) tied the game at 16 just a few minutes later, but Cobleskill retook the lead on the next possession. The Fighting Tigers took their two-point lead and expanded it to nine with 6:51 remaining in the half. D'Youville closed to within six after a Rosales layup with under three minutes to go in the half, but Cobleskill was able to extend their lead to 13 with just over a minute on the clock in the half. A last second layup from Rosales brought the score back to within single-digits as the Spartans trailed 46-37 at halftime.

Nearly two minutes into the second half, the Spartans pulled back to within six of the Cobleskill at 49-43. Following a Rosales layup, Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a three that made it a three-point game with 16:05 left in regulation. Cobleskill then went on a 12-2 scoring run, pushing their lead to double-digits again. The Fighting Tigers would maintain at least a 10-point lead for an extended period of time and then pushed their lead to 15 with 8:23 to go in the game.

The lead built by Cobleskill grew to 17 as the game neared five minutes remaining on the clock, but the Spartans closed the deficit to 11 with just under three left in the game. Two Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) free throws made it a nine-point game, but the Fighting Tigers would hold D'Youville to one point in the final two minutes of play and go on to defeat the Spartans by the final score of 98-82.

"We shot ourselves in the foot both games this weekend," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We have lots to do before Wednesday."

VanDuluitgaarden led the team in scoring with 18 points on his way to being named to the Harold J. Brodie Tournament All-Tournament Team. He added five rebounds to go with his 15 points and three rebounds on Saturday. Rosales added 14 points and a team high nine rebounds, while Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Bishop Kearney) led the team with five assists, adding nine points. In his first start of the season, VanAuken scored nine points with eight rebounds. Nwakeke grabbed seven rebounds with four assists.
