Spartan Men Unable to Overcome Early Struggles to Defeat Pitt.-Greensburg

Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team ended the 2017 portion of their schedule with a loss as they suffered an 84-69 defeat to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon.

D'Youville's inside game was working well early on as they went big in their starting lineup. Forwards Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) and Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored eight of the first 10 points for the Spartans in the first 6:10 of the game as they trailed 12-10. Greensburg began to find their scoring touch from that point on as they took a 20-10 lead over the Spartans slightly over a minute later. The Spartans then pulled to within six at 25-19 as the clock ticked to a second under 10 minutes to go in the half.

Greensburg was able to keep their distance from the Spartans as the half wore on. Their lead grew to 10 again at 33-23 and the increased their lead to 13 on their next possession. The Bobcat lead increased to 15 with 1:28 to go in the half, but Wanya Bruce (Rochester, NY/Fairport) sank a free throw in the final minute of play, sending D'Youville into the half trailing Greensburg 41-27.

With six unanswered points to begin the second half, the Bobcats increased their lead to 20 before Rosales scored the Spartan's first point of the half to make the score 47-28. Rosales continued to be the team's bright spot on offense, scoring 14 of the team's first 17 points of the half, including converting two and-one opportunities. Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) added five points in the first 10 minutes of play in the half to bring the Spartans back to within nine at 55-46.

However Greensburg would then turn on the offense, pushing their lead back up to 16 and then 19 with 7:24 remaining in the game. As the game hit under five minutes to go, Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) and Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) hit back-to-back threes to make it a 13-point game. Camel scored seven-straight points for D'Youville to make it an 11-point game, but D'Youville was unable to make it a single-digit deficit as they would fall to the Bobcats by the final score of 84-69.

"We are in a shooting slump right now and it hurt us in big moments," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We will be ready after the break to get back on track."

Rosales had another big game for the Spartans, leading the team with 18 points. Socha and Camel each added nine points, while Socha tied Brian Nwakeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) with nine rebounds. Nwakeke and VanDuluitgaarden each had seven points in the game. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) scored five points with Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) added six. Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) grabbed two rebounds and Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) grabbed five boards.

D'Youville will be off until the New Year when they get back to action with a non-conference game against Alfred State on Tuesday, January 2. Game time against the Pioneers will be at 6:00pm in the College Center Gym.
