Cresson, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a road loss on Saturday afternoon to the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 84-75.
Both teams struggled from the field to begin the first half as the Mounties scored first after 2:21 of play. D'Youville scored their first basket nearly four minutes into the game on a Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) three. It continued to be a one-possession game through the first five minutes until Mount Aloysius hit a three to take a six-point lead with 13:23 on the clock.
The Mounties took a 10-point lead with under eight minutes to go in the half as both teams continued to struggle on offense. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) made it a six-point game at 25-19 with 4:56 to go in the half and then the deficit was trimmed to four after two Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) free throws. The Spartans then were within one possession again, but Mount Aloysius would add three points in the final minute to take a 33-26 into halftime.
After a few minutes of play in the second half, Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) scored back-to-back layups to draw the deficit to two at 37-35. Mount Aloysius would respond by scoring eight unanswered for a 45-35 lead and continue to hold a 10-point lead for the next several minutes before the Spartans began to step up offensively with less than eight minutes in regulation.
Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) converted an and-one play followed by a VanDuluitgaarden layup with 6:56 to go in the game, making the score 59-54 and the men trailed by five. However just a few minutes later, the Mounties increased their advantage to double-digits, continuing to fight off the late Spartan push. The closest D'Youville got to Mount Aloysius' lead was eight in the final minutes as the Mounties held on to defeat the Spartans 84-75.
"It was a physical game and we suffered from early foul trouble that got us behind," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We got close several times, but never quite got all the way back."
VanDuluitgaarden led the team in scoring and rebounds by recording 19 points and eight rebounds. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) added 13 points, five rebounds and five assists while Heard scored eight points with team highs of six assists and three steals. Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) scored eight points and Rosales scored nine.
The next game for the men will come this Wednesday, January 24 as they host the Penn State-Behrend Lions at 6:00pm.
