Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team began their weekend with a loss to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats Saturday afternoon by the final score of 74-68.
Greensburg took the lead early over D'Youville as they were ahead 9-4 three minutes into the game. The Spartans pulled into one after a pair of Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a pair of free throws and then VanDuluitgaarden put D'Youville ahead with a three just a few seconds later. On their next possession down the court, the Bobcats tied the game and then took the lead on the following possession
Ahead by five with 10:09 to go in the first half, D'Youville began to fall even further behind. They trailed by 10 and then 13 with 5:07 to go, but the Spartans then got into a groove. Down 33-21 with 4:43 remaining, VanDuluitgaarden and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) outscored the Bobcats 12-5 in to close out the half – including back-to-back threes from VanDuluitgaarden in the final minute – to bring D'Youville within five as they trailed 38-33 at the half.
The Spartans continued to step it up on offense in the second half with nine unanswered points in the first 4:15 to retake the lead at 42-38. That lead didn't last long for D'Youville as the Bobcats went up 46-44 on a made three. Following a Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) three, the Spartans were right back in it as they trailed by one with under 10 to go.
With each basket the Bobcats made, D'Youville was right there with an answer. Greensburg was able to go up by six with 4:29 left in regulation, and then going up by 10 with 2:55 to go. With just 1:48 left, the deficit for D'Youville grew to 12 but the Spartans had a spark left, beginning with a Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) three. VanDuluitgaarden then scored four consecutive points to make it a five-point game at 71-66 with 0:20 to. On the ensuing inbounds pass, Heard came up with a steal and a layup to cut the deficit to just three at 71-68. Despite making it a one possession game, Greensburg came up big from the line in the final seconds to clinch the game for the Bobcats by the final score of 74-68.
"We played well in spurts today and were right there at the end," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We need to get healthy and make a couple big shots."
VanDuluitgaarden continued to get into form after coming back from injury as he recorded a double-double. The lengthy guard recorded a team high 25 points with 12 rebounds, second only to Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) with 13 boards. Heard scored 10 points to go with four assists while Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School), VanAuken, and Drumgoole each had eight points. Kunelius added six points, five boards, and three assists as well.
The men will have a quick turnaround as they will host the Penn State-Altoona Lions on Sunday, January 28 as 1:00pm.
