Spartans Struggle to Find Form in Loss to Lions

Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a big loss to the Penn State-Altoona Lions on Sunday afternoon by the final score of 91-63.

It was a tightly contested first half from the tip with neither team being more than one possession away from the other until the 14:02 mark where Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) hit a three for a 12-8 Spartan lead. Altoona followed with the next three baskets and took a 17-14 lead over the Spartans.

Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) began to heat up from the field as he hit a jumper followed by a three on the next possession to retake the lead at 19-17 over the Lions. The two teams would begin to go quiet on offense over the next several minutes with Altoona outscoring D'Youville 4-0 for the two minutes following VanDuluitgaarden's five-point spurt. In the final 5:24, the teams exchanged the lead on four straight possessions to the 2:36 mark where the Lions extended their lead to three at 29-26. In the final minute, the Lions scored on a layup to make their lead 38-32 at halftime.

The score remained close in the early portion of the season half as the Spartans trailed 42-36 following a pair of Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) free throws. Over the next six minutes, Altoona outscored D'Youville 15-4 to build a 57-40 lead. That Lead grew even further to 18 just a few minutes later.

As the half progressed, the Lions put the game out of reach. They led by 30 with 7:57 to go in the game, then growing that lead to 33 as the Spartans struggled on offense. In the final minutes, Bryce Little (Arcade, NY/Pioneer) drilled a three with an and-one from William Anderson (Hamburg, NY/Frontier) and free throws from Tyreke Mims (Churchville, NY/Churchville-Chili) brought the final score of 91-63.

"Honestly, we committed too many live ball turnovers," said head coach Earl Schunk. "Against an athletic team like Penn State-Altoona we have to limit their transition opportunities and we were unable to do that. Luckily we have another shot at them on Saturday."

VanDuluitgaarden had another strong offensive output with a team high 17 points, adding four rebounds and four assists. Drumgoole and Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) each scored 11 points with Rosales grabbing a team high seven boards. Steve Kunelius (Oswego, NY/Oswego) added three points and tied for a team high four assists. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) had six points and six rebounds.

The next game for the men comes this Wednesday, January 31 as they travel to Pitt.-Bradford to play the Panthers at 6:00pm.
