Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team won their second game of the young season on Wednesday evenings, defeating the guest Fredonia Blue Devils by the final score of 85-77.
A pair of three-pointers from Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) and Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) opened up the scoring for the Spartans, giving D'Youville an early 6-4 lead. The offense for the Spartans would begin to pick up the pace on offense as they extended their lead to 15-6 as Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) and Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) scored nine consecutive points for the men. Fredonia tied the game at 21-21 nearly half way through the half, but the Spartans would again pick it up on offense.
D'Youville would go on a 12-0 scoring run capped off by a Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) layup to put the Blue Devils down 33-21 with 6:10 to go in the half. Fredonia was within six with under five to go, but then Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) would score five of the next seven points for the men to extend their lead to 41-28. Beyer then drilled a three with 1:32 remaining on the clock to put D'Youville up 44-35 going into halftime.
VanDuluitgaarden opened up the second half with six consecutive points for D'Youville to extend their lead to 51-37. Both offenses would begin to go cold as neither scored for over a two-minute span until Fredonia made a basket to cut their deficit to 10 at 55-45 with 12:03 to go in the game.
The Blue Devils would get back to within single digits a few times, but the Spartans responded each time. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) began to get to the hoop on a regular basis, scoring four straight layups for the men as they led by 11 at 66-55 with just under six to go. However, Fredonia would not quit as they again got back to within single digits on a made three, but VanDuluitgaarden again heated up with seven straight points for the men for a 75-63 lead with 1:41 remaining in the game.
In the final two minutes, Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) helped ice the game with five free throws to keep the score out of reach for the Blue Devils. Darrell and Kyle Ebert (Lake View, NY/Frontier) also hit free throws down the stretch to secure the 85-77 victory for D'Youville.
"It was a nice win for us," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We had moments where we played to our potential and showed what we are capable of doing. We need to be more consistent as we head into conference play. I like where we are at right now."
With 21 points and nine rebounds, VanDuluitgaarden continued to be a key player in the team's early success. His 21 points led the team, followed by Nwaekeke with 14 points off the bench. Both Darrell and Camel scored 11 with Beyer adding eight, Heard adding seven, VanAuken scoring sixx, and Ebert tallying one.
VanAuken led the way with 10 rebounds as Heard and Nwaekeke recorded five each. Beyer and Camel each brought in four with Darrell grabbing six. Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) had two boards with Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) tallying one. Trey Boling (Tonawanda, NY/St. Joe's) and Jake Funderburk (Amherst, NY/Amherst) each saw their first game action as a Spartan in the game.
The next game for the men will come after Thanksgiving as they host the Hilbert Hawks in their conference opener on Wednesday, November 28 at 8:00pm.
