Bradford, PA - The D'Youville men's basketball team defeated Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday January 16, 81-59. This makes the Spartans 4-4 in the Alleghany Mountain Collegiate Conference and 6-8 overall.
The game started with the teams trading off points for the first two minutes, after that it was all Spartans. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/ St. Joe's) went off draining two three-pointers, to make what was a 3-3 tied game a 9-3 lead. Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/ Vernon-Verona-Sherill) followed right behind making a layup with 16:47 left to extend the team's lead to 11-3. With the Panthers not making their shots, the Spartans kept growing their deficit. After a layup made by Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/ Lockport), Pitt.-Bradford called a timeout. That helped keep the score stay the same for a minute of play, but D'Youville bounced back. The home team called another timeout, after VanDuluitgaarden made a layup, and with Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/ Cheektowaga) added two more and a three to make the score 25-5.
Pitt.-Bradford cut the lead by making two layups, but Darrell and Beyer took those points right back to make the score 31-9 with 11:20 to go in the half. Two minutes later, VanDuluitgaarden and Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/ Charles Finney) grew the lead once again with a layup and a three. Right after, the Panthers went on a 12-4 run through the next eight plus minutes. The squads headed to the locker room at the half with the Spartans leading 40-21.
VanDuluitgaarden came out ready to go adding the first three points to the scoreboard with a free throw and a jumper. Along with Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, NY/ John F. Kennedy), the duo scored the team's first 14 points in the second half. The Panthers weren't going to go down without a fight though, also scoring nine points during this time to make the score 56-30 with just over 13 to go in regulation.
Grabbing a steal at 8:24, Beyer went on to add a dunk to his stats, right after making a three-pointer. Still fighting, the Panthers would go on a 9-3 run, that would be ended by two more three's by Beyer. Bradford would continue to go on to add four more points to the scoreboard with 3:09 left, only for Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/ Early College) to drain yet another three for the Spartans. The Panthers continued to try to stop D'Youville but could not succeed.
"We emphasized coming out aggressively early today, seeing we hadn't played that way the last few games," said head coach Earl Schunk following the victory. "We played a great first 10 minutes of each half. Pitt.-Bradford deserves a lot of credit for playing hard for the full 40 minutes and battling back. We still need to be more consistent, but I was pleased with our overall effort today."
D'Youville shot for 50% from the field goal range, while going 41.7 % from the arc.
The team was led by Beyer who snagged 24 points, and Vanduluitgaarden who earned a double-double with 21 points and 11 rebounds. Heard and Nwaekeke each tallied eight points. Nwaekeke also added five rebounds and a team high of five assists. Also chipping in five dimes was Darrell, along with six points and five rebounds.
Camel grabbed seven points, Drumgoole five, and Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/ Newark) two points and rebounds. Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/ Caledonia-Mumford) also added solid minutes getting four rebounds and assists, while also recording the team high of two blocks.
The Spartans return to the College Center on Saturday at 3 pm to face Pitt.-Greensburg. The team then face Greensburg on their home court on Monday, January 21 at 3pm.
