D'Youville Falls to Greensburg on the Road in Men's Basketball

Greensburg, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a tough loss to the Pitt.-Greensburg Bobcats on Monday afternoon, losing by the final score of 77-70.

After just over two minutes of play in the first half, the Bobcats led the Spartans 9-7. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) was the lone source of offense for D'Youville in the first several minutes of the game, scoring the first 12 point for the men as the Spartans took a 12-11 lead after 5:09 of play. Following Beyer's three to give D'Youville the lead, neither team would score for over three minutes until Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a pair of free throws to increase the lead to 14-11 D'Youville.

Greensburg would go on to score six consecutive points to take a 17-14 lead. With a made three pointer from the Bobcats, Greensburg would begin to take control of the game moving into the final 10 minutes of the first half. Another Beyer three with 4:02 left in the first would put the Spartans down by one as Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) gave his team the lead with a pair of free throws. The Bobcats would then answer with a run where they took a 38-30 lead over the Spartans. Four points in the final minute of the half from D'Youville would cut the deficit to four as Greensburg led at halftime 38-34.

D'Youville was back to within two after a pair of VanDuluitgaarden free throws 2:11 into the second. Several minutes later, Greensburg built their largest lead of 10 following a layup. Beyer trimmed the lead to four yet again for the Spartans with a made layup, then bringing the score to 50-48 Greensburg after making a jumper.

With under nine to go in the game, the Bobcats took a nine-point lead over D'Youville. Over nearly a four-minute span following the Greensburg made layup, just four points were scored between the two teams. The Bobcats extended their lead to 14 following a made layup with 4:23 to go in the game as D'Youville would score the next nine points to trail by just five. With 2:26 to go, VanDuluitgaarden made a layup, pulling the Spartans to within a basket at 69-66 and D'Youville was right back in the game. However, Greensburg began to pull away as they were able to shut down the late Spartan run, defeating D'Youville by the final score of 77-70.

"We never got in an offensive flow today," said head coach Earl Schunk. "Our defense kept us in the game and got us close at the end, but Pitt.-Greenburg outplayed us today. It's disappointing because we have been playing very well as of late; we have some big games ahead to make up for today. I have a lot of faith in these guys."

Beyer was the leading scorer for the me nine the game with 27 points, adding nine rebounds, three assists, and three steals. VanDuluitgaarden added 19 points with eight boards, four steals, three assists, and three blocks while Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) grabbed nine rebounds and four assists, playing all 40 minutes in the game. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) tallied seven points off the bench with Camel adding eight points.

D'Youville will next play this Wednesday, January 23 as they play at Alfred State at 7:00pm.
