Men Fall in Final Non-Conference Game

Alfred, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a loss to the Alfred State Pioneers on Wednesday evening by the final score of 79-76.

D'Youville jumped out to an early 7-0 as Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) and Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) shouldered the scoring load for the Spartans early, scoring all seven points. The two would then score the next four points for the men before Alfred State would take over the lead at 13-11 just under five minutes into the game. With the Pioneers leading 19-16 after seven minutes of play, the two teams would go cold for the next 2:13 until Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) made a jumper and the men trailed by one.

Heard would follow up with another jumper to give the men the lead at 23-22 and then put the Spartans up by two with 8:12 to go in the first with a pair of free throws. The two teams would go back and forth until the Pioneers went up by thee with 4:32 to go. That lead grew to 11 as part of a 13-0 run from Alfred State as they began to take control of the game. D'Youville was able to score out the half strong, capped off with a three from Beyer as the Spartans trailed the Pioneers 44-38 at the half.

A Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) three pulled D'Youville to within three to start the second half, the Alfred State answered and led by six after five-plus minutes of play. Back-to-back baskets from Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) tied the game at 55-55 before a Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) gave the men the lead on a made layup with 10:17 to go in regulation.

Alfred State would come back to take a five-point lead with 6:14 to go, but Darrell would tie the game at 69-69 two minutes later. Within one after two Darrell free throws and 2:34 remaining on the clock, the Pioneers were able to build up a four-point lead. A made VanDuluitgaarden free throw with 0:17 to go put the Spartans down one at 77-76, but Alfred State was able to hold on late to win the game 79-76.

"We made a lot of really good plays that gave us an opportunity to win in the end," said head coach Earl Schunk. "Unfortunately a free throw didn't fall and we missed a good look from three at the end. If we keep plugging away, we will pull games like this out. We have some big conference games ahead and we will need everyone to stay together, positive and focused for us to win those games."

Beyer led the team in scoring with 22 points to go with his eight rebounds and two blocks. VanDuluitgaarden contributed 10 points with a team high 15 boards while Darrell tallied 15 points. Will VanAuken (Caledona, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) registered five rebounds and a team high four assists in a team high 24 minutes played.

Sharp added 10 points off the bench with Heard scoring eight and Drumgoole four. Jake Socha (Tonawanda, NY/Niagara Catholic) scored three to go with one rebound in his first game back from injury and Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) scored four. Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) dished out two assists.

The next game for the men will come this Saturday, January 26 as they travel to play the first place La Roche Redhawks at 4:00pm.
