Pittsburgh, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team went down to the La Roche Redhawks on Saturday afternoon, falling by the final score of 101-85.
La Roche led early at 6-2 and then 10-6 to maintain their four-point advantage. The Spartans would go on to score seven unanswered points capped off by a Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) three that put D'Youville up 13-11 after 5:18 of play. Over the next several minutes of play, the Redhawks would regain their form and lead the Spartans 25-17 nearly halfway through the first half.
A Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) three made it a three-point game but La Roche would tally three consecutive threes and extend their advantage to 38-29. The points continued to pour in from the two high-scoring teams as a Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) hit a jumper to make it a two-point game with 4:39 remaining in the half. In the final minutes of the half, the Redhawks would again heat up to regain their large lead, up 58-49 at halftime.
D'Youville struggled early in the second, falling behind by 15 at 69-54 early. That lead inflated to 20 and then 23 for La Roche as the Spartans began to fall behind even more.
Despite falling behind the Redhawks by a wide margin, D'Youville outscored La Roche 14-11 in the final 10 minutes of the game. However the Redhawks set the tone early in the second half and carried their lead through to the end, defeating D'Youville 101-85.
"They showed why they were the defending champs in the first half, shooting 60% from three-point range," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We did some good things in the second half that we need to carry to our home games next week."
Heard led the men in scoring on Saturday with 17 points, adding seven rebounds. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) scored 16 points in the game while VanDuluitgaarden scored 13 with seven boards. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) added eight points with Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) scoring nine and Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) tallying seven.
VanAuken chipped in with six points, three rebounds, and three assists while Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College), Kyle Ebert (Lake View, NY/Frontier), and Jake Funderburk (Amherst, NY/Amherst) all saw quality extended minutes.
The next game for the men will come this Wednesday as the Spartans host the Medaille Mavericks at 8:00pm.
