Buffalo, NY – The D'Youville men's basketball team picked up a big conference win on Saturday afternoon, defeating the Mount Aloysius Mounties by the final score of 75-63.
D'Youville built a quick 5-0 advantage over Mount Aloysius before increasing their lead to 9-3 after a Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) layup. The Mounties would then go on to score the next five points, trimming their deficit to one after 3:56 of play. A three-pointer tied the game at 13-13 before the Mounties would take their first lead of the game, but the Spartans would recapture their lead at 18-18 on a Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) layup with 11:27 to go in the half.
Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) drilled a three give D'Youville a 25-20 advantage. Several minutes later, that lead grew to eight as Sharp drilled another three with the Spartans up 30-22 with 6:22 to go in the half. The lead continued to row for the Spartans as they increased their lead to 12 on a VanDulutgaarden layup with under three to go in the first. The two teams would trade baskets with the Mounties climbing back into a single-digit deficit, trailing 42-34 at the half.
The Spartans opened up the second half with five consecutive points to tale a 47-34 lead over the Mounties. After a made free throw, Mount Aloysius pulled to within 11 after 4:29 of play in the second half. That lead decreased to seven as D'Youville led 52-45, but a Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) made jumper a few minutes later put the Spartans back ahead by 10 with 10:37 to go.
Five consecutive points from Sharp made it a 13-point lead for the Spartans yet again as they built a solid lead over their guests. Both teams would go cold from the field from a Mounties free throw at the 9:06 mark to an Aloysius layup with 6:21 to go, making the score 62-52 in favor of D'Youville. Darrell increased the Spartan lead to 14 after a floater with under five in the game. He would then go on to add four consecutive points in addition to his floater as the Spartans went up 70-55.
On the next possession down the court, VanDuluitgaarden drilled a big three to put the Spartans ahead 73-55 with 3:01 to go. With under two minutes in regulation, the Mounties pulled back to trail by 13. Mount Aloysius trimmed the lead to 11 at 73-62 as the Spartans called a timeout with 0:42.6 to go in the game. A good free throw from the Mounties made it a 10-point game, but Kyle Ebert (Lake View, NY/Frontier) iced the game with a pair of free throws as the Spartans won the game by the final score of 75-63.
"This was possibly our best 40 minutes all season on both ends of the floor," said head coach Earl Schunk following the victory. "Mount Aloysius is a tough team and you have to earn every bucket against them. We have 24 hours to enjoy this and then it's on to Monday against Pitt.-Bradford."
VanDuluitgaarden led the way for the Spartans with 19 points, 16 rebounds, six blocks, three steals, and two assists. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) added 17 points while Darrell tallied 10 points and six assists. Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) tallied 10 points as well in the game while Sharp added a team high 13 off the bench.
Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) grabbed seven boards with four assists. Nwaekeke had three rebounds in the game with Ebert adding two. Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney), Jake Funderburk (Amherst, NY/Amherst), and Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Earl College) all played solid minutes in the win.
The next game for the men comes quickly as they host the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers this Monday, February 4 at 8:00pm.
