Buffalo, NY - Two of the top five teams in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference (AMCC) will square off on Wednesday evening as the Penn State-Behrend Lions host the D'Youville men's basketball team in the AMCC Game of the Week.
In their previous meeting in early January, the Spartans gave the Lions everything they could handle, coming out on top at home with a 73-71 victory. Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) had a career game for D'Youville and came through in the clutch big-time for the men. He led the team with 21 points including a buzzer-beating three to end the first half and the go-ahead layup to put the Spartans up in the final second of the game. Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) added 19 points with nine boards and five assists in the win.
The men's basketball team is riding a two-game win streak after coming off a 94-73 victory over the Pitt.-Bradford Panthers on Monday evening. Four Spartans scoring in double-figures, led by Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) with 24 points and VanDuluitgaarden added 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Those two have been the driving forces for the Spartans this season. VanDulutigaarden and Beyer are one-two in the conference in scoring with Jeremy scoring 17.3 PPG and Grant scoring 16.5 PPG. Jeremy is also third in the conference in rebounding with 9.8 RPG while Byer is fourth in the conference with a 44.4% three-point percentage.
Senior starters Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) and Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) have been outstanding defensive presences to compliment the scoring of the two big guns. Darrell is the floor general for D'Youville and has been a welcomed addition at both ends of the court with his speed, vision, and quickness.
D'Youville has relied on strong play from the bench to help put them in a playoff position. Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) is one of the best sharp-shooters in the conference while Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) has been a go-to scorer and ball-handler for the women. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) is another scoring presence and big rebounding threat as well.
Behrend is one of the most dangerous teams in the AMCC, currently sitting at second in the conference standings. Four players average double-figures in scoring for the Lions as their team mentality and unselfishness have made them perennial contenders in the AMCC.
The Lions have gone 6-1 overall and 5-1 in conference since their loss to the Spartans on January 9 with the only loss coming to the undefeated and first place La Roche Redhawks.
