Erie, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team suffered a loss on Wednesday evening as they were defeated by the host Penn State-Behrend Lions by the final score of 76-56.
There wasn't much scoring in the first several minutes of the game. A Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) put the Spartans up 7-2 after 4:37 of play in the first half, but the Lions would take the lead at 8-7 just a few minutes later. A made Behrend jumper put the Lions ahead by seven, but D'Youville would keep it close and trail by four at 18-14 after a Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) layup with 8:40 to go in the first half.
The Lions again got on a roll and built a 10-point lead with 5:17 remaining on the clock. Beyer would hit another jumper to make it a six-point game, but Behrend would take control of the game. They led by 15 at 44-29 before the Spartans would add a layup to end the first, trailing 44-31.
D'Youville remained behind the Lions in the second half. Trailing by 16 with 11:59 to go in the game, the Spartans didn't stop working to get back in the game.
That hard work put D'Youville within 10 at 58-48 with 8:51 to go in the game following a Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) layup. However, The Spartans were never able to make it a single-digit deficit as they went on to lose the game 76-56.
"We came out tentatively early and they jumped ahead," said head coach Earl Schunk following the loss. "We had good moments in the second half but needed to put more good possessions together to get close enough to make them worry. We hope to see them again."
Darrell led the team with 21 points, adding six rebounds. Jeremy VanDuluitGaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) scored eight points with six rebounds while Beyer added nine points. Heard was the only other player in double-figures with 11 points. Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) grabbed five boards while Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) tallied two boards. Brian Nwaekeke (Corona, CA/John F. Kennedy) scored four points while Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) grabbed one rebound.
