Cresson, PA – The D'Youville men's basketball team saw their season come to an end on Wednesday evening as they lost to the fourth seeded Mount Aloysius Mounties in the first round of the AMCC playoffs by the final score of 72-57.
Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) gave the fifth seeded Spartans an 8-6 lead on his second three pointer within the first four minutes of play in the game. Mount Aloysius would then retake the lead and increase it to eight over the next several minutes before a Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) three brought it back to a five-point game. D'Youville's offense would continue to struggle through the first 10 minutes of the half as Jeremy VanDuluitgaarden (Verona, NY/Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) sank a pair of free throws to put the Spartans behind 18-13 with 10:54 to go in the half.
A Mounties three seconds later would send Aloysius up by 11 and with 7:28 to go in the half, the Mounties would increase their lead to 13 at 29-16. From that point on, the Spartans would take control of the game. The next four baskets from D'Youville would all come from different players as they pulled to within four at 29-25 with 5:06 on the clock.
Mount Aloysius would make a pair of free throws in the next minute to put them back up by six with the next basket would coming over two minutes later when VanDuluitgaarden would make a layup just to follow up another minute later with a three and close the deficit to one at 31-30. With 0:14 to go in the half, Will VanAuken (Caledonia, NY/Caledonia-Mumford) would hit a huge three to send D'Youville into halftime with a 33-31 lead over the Mounties.
On their first possession of the second half, Aloysius would tie the game at 33. D'Youville would retake the lead on two VanDuluitgaarden free throws three minutes later just to have the Mounties recapture the lead. The score would then go back-and-forth for the next several minutes as the teams battled to take control of the game.
Tied at 37-37, the Mounties would gain some momentum as they went up by seven with 12:36 to go in the game. That lead would fall back down to three after a VanDuluitgaarden made layup, but balloon up to nine minutes later – the largest lead of the half for either team. D'Youville would then begin to go cold from the field, falling behind by 12 before a Devon Camel (Cheektowaga, NY/Cheektowaga) three that made it a nine-point game with 3:57 remaining in regulation.
The tough Aloysius defense stifled the high-powered Spartan offense down the stretch. Nine was as close as D'Youville could get to the lead as they would go on to suffer a first round exit in the AMCC playoffs by the final score of 72-57.
In his final career game as a Spartan, VanDuluitgaarden broke the scoring record for D'Youville with 22 points for a total of 1,358 for a career.
