Buffalo, NY - The D'Youville community came together earlier this month in an effort to benefit the people of Haiti that were impacted by a natural disaster.
On Friday, September 20, the Hoops for Haiti wheelchair basketball tournament took place at D'Youville's College Center Gym with the goal of raising funds for the Haiti Community Rehab Project. In total, over $1,000 was raised for the event through t-shirt sales and a basket raffle.
Eight teams made up of 50 participants participated in the event Friday evening with a fun and unique experience to benefit a wonderful cause. The Haiti Community Rehab Project provides orthotics and other care to victims of the Haiti earthquake.
The event was sponsored by the D'Youville men's basketball team in association with the D'Youville Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the D'Youvlle Physical Therapy Department, and the D'Youville Student Government. Head men's basketball coach Earl Schunk was a primary coordinator of the event with Clinical Associate Professor of Physical Therapy Sarah P. Pictor, PT, DPT, PCS. Coach Schunk was extremely pleased with the turnout from not only his players, by the entire school.
"It's been really satisfying to see the campus community come together to run this event for such a worthy cause," said Schunk. "I think a lot of the participants have a newfound respect for the plight of people who need to use a wheelchair in their daily lives and the amount of upper body strength that it takes to navigate a wheelchair through a day. I was really proud of the way my guys stepped up and helped run this event."
This is not the first event that the men's basketball program has put on to benefit those impacted by natural disasters. In 2017, the team put on their Benefit for Puerto Rico game in which the team raised over $500 to donate to those who were impacted by Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.
The D'Youville men's basketball team will begin their season Tuesday, November 12 at 7:00pm at Fredonia with the home opener coming that Friday, November 15 at 7:00pm against Wells.
