Men Fall in Overtime in Season Opener Against Blue Devils

Fredonia, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball season tipped off their 2019-20 season on Tuesday evening as they fell to the Fredonia Blue Devils on the road in overtime by the final score of 91-88.

Fredonia was out in front early in the first half, but the Spartans pulled to within two at 8-6 following a Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) three. Back-to-back threes from Darrius Hartzong (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) and Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) to draw the game to two at 18-16 with 10:44 to go in the half.

Continuing the trend of firing from long distance, Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) drilled a three following a Fredonia free throw to give D'Youville their first lead of the game at 20-19. Despite taking the lead away from the Blue Devils, Fredonia would regain it yet again and go ahead by five with 5:26 to play in the first. With 1:46 to go, Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) would tie the game at 35 with his fourth and fifth consecutive points for the men and then give the team the lead with a layup. Freshmen Ryan Davis (Darian Center, NY/Alexander) and Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) would cap off the scoring for the Spartans in the first with a pair of free throws and a three to send D'Youville into the half leading 42-37.

Nearly two minutes into the second half, Fredonia tied the game up at 43 but Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) would give the team the lead right back on their next possession. From that point on, the teams would go back-and-forth with neither team holding more than a possession lead until the 11:30 mark when Davis sent D'Youville up by two with a pair of three throws as the Spartans led 61-56.

With under eight minutes to go in regulation, Beyer would score five consecutive points to extend their lead to eight, followed by a Rosales layup that gave D'Youville their largest lead of the game at 10 with 4:51 remaining on the clock. As the half went on, Fredonia began to chip away at the Spartan's lead and trailed by one with 1:54 to go. On their next possession, the Blue Devils would take the lead and hold their lead at 78-76 with a pair of free throws. Beyer would then hit two free throws to tie the game at 0:49 left in regulation and neither team would score again as the game went to overtime.

With 0:50 to go in the game, Fredonia went up by four at 87-83 and then extended their lead to 89-84 with 0:28. Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) came up huge for the men with 0:09 remaining as he hit a big three and a free throw to make it a two-point game, but the Spartans ran out of time as they fell in their season opener 91-88 to Fredonia.

Beyer led the team with 23 points in the agme while adding three rebounds and two steals. Darrell added 18 points with a team high four assists to go with four rebounds. Rosales led the team with eight rebounds and scored 16 points.
