Hamburg, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team opened up their conference schedule on Wednesday evening, falling to the Hilbert Hawks by the final score of 99-75.
Hilbert led by two with back-to-back baskets from Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) at 10-8 through 3:31 into the game. The Hawks lead grew to seven at 19-12 before Ryan Davis (Darien Center, NY/Alexander) hit a jumper to make it a five-point game several minutes later. As D'Youville continued to chip away, a Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) three put the Spartans back to within one possession at 21-24 with 10:34 to go in the half.
After Sharp's three, Hilbert would start to pull away from D'Youville. A 10-0 run would come from the Hawks as they grew their lead to double-digits. With 5:26 to go in the first, Hilbert opened up their largest lead of the game at 18 with a 43-25 advantage. As the halftime horn sounded, the Hawks led 53-37.
Through the first 3:15 of the second half, D'Youville brought their deficit back down to 11 as they looked to get back in the game. However after a Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) three that made it 10-point deficit, Hilbert would go on a 16-0 run over a several minute span to lead 78-52.
As the half went on, the Spartans fought hard but were unable to regain their footing in the game. D'Youville would go on to lose their first conference game of the season 99-75.
Hartzog led the team with 22 points in the loss as Darrell added 19 points and a team high four assists. Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) added 10 points with five rebounds while Davis scored six points off the bench with a team high six rebounds. Sharp scored a team-high seven points off the bench with four rebounds.
The next game for the men will come next Tuesday, November 26 as they travel to Alfred State to play the Pioneers at 4:00pm.
