Two Spartans Record Double-Doubles in OT Loss to Medgar Evers

New York City, NY - The D'Youville men's basketball team went battled in a thrilling overtime game on Saturday afternoon in the Big Apple as the Spartans fell to the Medgar Evers Cougars 119-113 in overtime.

After the Cougars went ahead early in the game, the Spartans came back to take the lead at 8-6 with a Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) layup. Six consecutive points would then come from Medgar Evers before Darrell would close the gap to one at 14-15. The two teams would continue to battle, but the Cougars would start to pull away as they increased their lead to nine at 25-16 with 11:49 to go in the first half. 

Once again, the Spartans would close the gap to one possession as Jagdeep Drumgoole (Rochester, NY/Early College) made a layup to cut the deficit to two at 25-27. As the half moved closer to half time, Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) would begin to heat up as he hit a pair of free throws followed by a three to keep the deficit to two at 41-43 with 3:41 remaining in the first. A three from Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St.Joe's) kept D'Youville down two with 2:04 to go, but the Cougars would heat up late in the first and head into the half leading 58-47.

The Spartans would make several attempts to get back into the game early in the second half, but Medgar Evers pushed back and would increase their lead. They would go ahead by 14 after five minutes of play before a Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) pulled D'Youville to within six at 60-66. Despite making it a six-point game, the Cougars were able to keep the Spartans at a safe distance as they moved into the final 10 minutes of regulation.

Down by 13 with 9:10 to go, the Spartans started to chip away at the Cougar lead. With 6:05 to go in the second, the Spartans were down by five following a Darrell layup. A pair of Rosales layups put D'Youville down by one at 88-89 with less that four minutes remaining as two Beyer free throws would give the Spartans their first lead of the half just seconds later. Beyer went on to drill a three with 0:55 to go in the second to five the men a four-point advantage, but Medgar Evers made a layup with 0:39 remaining in regulation to send the game into overtime at 98-98.

An onslaught of baskets continued into overtime as the two teams exchanged baskets and the lead. Rosales tied the game at 109 with 1:33 to go in overtime with the Cougars responding by scoring eight unanswered to go ahead 1117-109. D'Youville was then unable to recover with the limited time left in the game as they would fall to Medgar Evers by the final score of 119-113.

"I was really proud of the guys today," said head coach Earl Schunk. "We fought back from 16 down to take a lead, but unfortunately we couldn't hold it - foul trouble cost us in overtime. If we continue playing like this, we will do some damage eventually."

All five starters scored in double-figures for the men, led by Rosales at both ends of the court with 34 points and 16 rebounds in the loss. Beyer stuffed the stat sheet with 29 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Darrell had a fantastic game as well, scoring 13 points and added 11 assists for his first double-double of the season.

Sharp came up big for the team and was extremely effective from long range as he scored 17 points with 15 points coming from behind the arc. Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) scored 11 points with five rebounds as well. Off the bench, Drumgoole led the team with four points. Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) added three points with Ryan Davis (Darian Center, NY/Alexander) scoring two.

The next game for the men will come tomorrow as they take on North Carolina Wesleyan on Sunday at 1:00pm with the two teams facing off at Medgar Evers.
