Big Second Half Leads Mounties over Spartans

Cresson, PA - The D'Youville men's basketball team fell to the host Mount Aloysius Mounties on Wednesday afternoon by the final score of 75-60.

D'Youville fell behind early in the game as they trailed 6-0 through the first 2:05 of play. However three different Spartans would each score their first baskets of the game to tie the game up at 6-6 several minutes later. As the half went on, neither team could find a strong footing on the offense end with Mount Aloysius lead 14-8 with 10:34 to go in the half.

The Mounties would begin to get going after opening up their six-point lead as they extended it to eight at 22-14 on a made layup. Noah Denz (East Aurora, NY/East Aurora) would then trim the deficit to five with a made three, followed by two Grant Beyer (Williamsville, NY/St. Joe's) made free throws with 3:24 to go in the first to make it a one-possession game with the Spartans trailing 21-24. Denz would go on to make a layup with 0:32 to go in the half as D'Youville was behind by two and then a Juan Miguel Rosales (Guatemala City, Guatemala/Village School) free throw brought it down to a one-point game before the Mounties sank a free throw at the end of the half to lead 39-37.

To open up the second half, Rosales would make a layup to tie the game and put the Spartans right back in the game. However, the Mounties would go on a 12-0 run over the next four-plus minutes to build their lead back up.

The Spartans would fight to stay in the game, trailing by 12 with 6:57 to go in the game at 49-61. However, the second half explosion from Mount Aloysius was too much for D'Youville to overcome as they fell the Mounties by the final of 75-60.

Beyer led the team in scoring, rebounding, and steals in Wednesday's contest with 17 points, nine rebounds, and four steals - also tying for the team lead in steals with two. Both Denz and Brian Sharp (Newark, NY/Newark) added 10 points with Denz tallying two assists and three rebounds while Sharp went a perfect 6-6 from the free throw line.

Off the bench, Will Saunders (Cleveland, OH/Euclid) and Darrius Hartzog (Rochester, NY/Wilson Magnet) each scored seven points with Saunders grabbing four rebounds and Hartzog grabbing two with two assists. Rosales scored eight points with seven rebounds while Simeon Heard (Rochester, NY/Charles Finney) pulled in two rebounds with two assists and Devon Darrell (Lockport, NY/Lockport) scored one point.

D'Youville will return home in exactly one week as they will host Pitt.-Bradford on Wednesday, January 15 at 6:00pm.
